Meet HINEMOA – one of the semifinalists in Söngvakeppnin 2015

Hinemoa is an Icelandic band that was formed in 2014, so it’s a fairly young band. The lead singers, Ásta and Rakel, were both in other projects at the time, but they felt they also needed an arena where they could work on their own material.

In addition to singing they both play the guitar, and Ásta also plays the ukulele and accordion. Along with Gísli (vocals/drums/percussion), Kristófer (drums/percussion) and Sindri (bass) they play relaxing, enjoyable music that combines harmonies, acoustics and rhythms.

The band’s not very Icelandic name is taken from a Maori legend, called “Hinemoa and Tutanekai”, which is a “Romeo and Juliet” kind of story, only with a much happier ending.

Hinemoa has not released many songs yet, but there are more on the way. Through their participation in Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins 2015 they hope for their music to reach a wider audience.

Ásta is the composer of their entry, “Þú leitar líka að mér” (You look for me as well). The lyrics, both in Icelandic and English, are written by Begrún Íris Sævarsdóttir. These two were also behind last year’s “Eftir eitt lag”.

In our interview you can, among other things, meet the band, find out what kind of song their entry is and what their favorite Eurovision entries are. They also played their first original song, “Bye Bye Birdie” for us!
