Jessika: “Singing is my true love!”

Jessika has been taking part in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest every year since 2011. In the past three years, she scored top 10 results with her hits “Ultraviolet“, “Hypnotica” – which also won the televoting on the night, and “Fandango”. She is back again this year with the same composing team, and she will try and win the Maltese Eurovision ticket with her song “The Flame”.

We had a lovely chat with Jessika about her new song, about her experience in Malta Eurovision, as well as other projects she is currently working on. Check out all of this, and get to know Jessika a bit better in our interview right here:

First of all I would like to congratulate you for making it to the top 20! How do you feel about being in the semi finals of Malta’s selection once again?

Thank you so much. Well it’s always been a great experience so I am happy, excited and really looking forward for this years’ selection.

How did you decide to enter this Contest this year?

Singing Is my true love and thus I am participating again as I love what I do and also I love the Eurovision song contest and it would be a dream come true to represent my own country Malta.

Can you tell us more about the story behind your song, and the team who worked on it?

I have been working with Gerard James Borg and Philip Vella for a long time and it’s not a question of getting the right chemistry but achieving the right amount of respect and appreciation to what each other can do. It’s like, we’re a family, therefore when the selection was approaching, Gerard and I set a meeting and started thinking what we can do to come up with something different from the previous years. We talked about life experiences as well and that’s how he penned The Flame, then Philip Vella came along with a distinctive sound creating a beautiful modern ballad.

How are you getting ready for the national final? Did your ideas for the stage performance all come together, and how is everything going to look like?

Cheeky question… I won’t tell you how it will look as you won’t see the show!! Well I’m only telling you that this year it’s going to be me and my song, me and my voice, me and the audience and most of all, me and my feelings, hoping to transmit the same emotions that I feel in this song.

Who do you think is your biggest competition to win the Maltese national final?

I believe that each artist participated in the national final believing in his product and hoping in the chance to win the ticket to represent Malta in Stockholm. It’s always a matter of luck and opinion of the jury and the public’s vote.

What would representing Malta in Eurovision mean to you?

Since I was a child I used to dream to be on that great stage and represent my own country, knowing the amount of support we give to our ambassadors in the festival and the fun the audience seem to have. I would be living the dream!

What would be your all time favourite Eurovision song?

“Euphoria” by Loreen.

What sort of music do you listen to in your free time, when all you want is to relax?

I listen to all kinds of music depends on the mood I’m in, I currently am listening to lots of Lana del Rey, Jess Glynne, Foxes, Carly Rae Jepsen, Rita Ora, Katy b, Natasha Bedingfield, 4 non blondes, Justin Bieber, ed Sheeran, Madcon, One republic, Coldplay … I can go on forever!!

What do you do when you are not singing?

I love jogging outside, dancing, cooking and believe it or not watch football!

Are you engaged in any other projects at the moment?

I love being a busy bee, so apart from my singing career, I am acting in a local tv series ‘Hbieb u Ghedewwa’ and am doing my Masters degree in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language. Will be doing my exams this week!!

Do you have a message for all the readers of ESCBubble who will support you in Malta’s national final?

I would like to thank you all so much for the support you give me throughout the years and the support you give to the Maltese talent. Having your appreciation and support is what makes an artist go on and believe in a dream! Thanks so much again.
