Live: Germany – Unser Song 2017!
by Kyle Scott · February 9, 2017
Tonight we will see another act and song selected for Kyiv with Germany hosting their Unser Song 2017 contest live from Cologne kicking off at 20.15 CET. The show will once again be hosted by Barbara Schöneberger and will see 5 artists compete for the chance to represent Germany at Eurovision 2017.
The winner of tonight’s show will be decided entirely by a public vote though 4 different rounds of performances with the artists performing covers of well-known songs as well as the two potential Eurovision entries “Wildfire” and “Perfect Life”. An expert panel of Lena, Tim Bendzko and Florian Silbereisen will be on hand to provide comments on the performances and international viewers can provide feedback by voting via Eurovision Vibes which is available on the official Eurovision app.
The artists performing in tonight’s show for the chance to represent Germany in Kyiv are:
- Axel Feige
- Felicia Lu Kürbiß
- Helene Nissen
- Yosefin Buohler
Kyle and Ervin will be blogging the entire show here live and you can watch along with all the action here.
Good evening everyone! A big welcome to all joining us this evening as we take you through Unser Song 2017 to find out who will be representing Germany in Kyiv. The show will be starting very shortly!
Good evening from me as well 🙂
Everyone downloaded the Eurovision app, in order to vote in this final? 🙂
Is it me, or are we running a little bit late? 🙂
Slightly behind I think, 1 minute and counting!
And we are off!
Oh there we go! 🙂
Guten Abend, Deutschland! 🙂
Oh wow, we get the whole show dubbed into English as well!
Barbara never failing to disappoint in her choice of outfits! She is quite the image
NDR just saved me from translating the show from German… As broken as my German is…
Barbara giving her idea of what makes a successful Eurovision entry!
Can Germany just send Barbara to Eurovision please?
She really is quite the all-rounder! Not afraid to say no to anything!
Shaking your booty to get points didn’t do Ann-Sophie any good though did it….
Well, she wasn’t really shaking her booty, was she? 😉
And now we have an introduction to our Jury members for the evening Florian Silbereisen, Tim Bendzko and Eurovision royalty Lena!
Ann-Sophie would have got a 12 from me anyway, I’ll say that much!
Lena in Olso seems like yesterday, to think it was 7 years ago now!
Ok, so – Lena doesn’t remember anything in Oslo… Well done, girl!
So round 1 will see all 5 candidates perform a cover song, and the top 3 will progress to singing the first of the 2 candidate songs
Barbara pretending the format isn’t complicated and unnecessary….!
First up tonight we have Helena, a quick VT introduction to her before she will be taking to the stage to perform a cover of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues”
Helena failing in various talent shows doesn’t really sound promising…
And here she is, first up its Helena!
Not the most positive of VT’s…but lets hold back on judgement!
Helena seems to be busker-cum-school musical performer here….it is a little all over the place, musically and stylistically
Ok, so this girl can sing pretty well. Also, I have to say – this seems a lot of fun on stage. She misses almost every camera shot, whilst in close-ups her eyes are creepily wide open… Anyways, a decent start if you ask me.
I give Helena an extra plus for playing the guitar live.
A solid start from Helena, her vocals were solid, but she doesn’t have much of a range, which could be limiting for the eurovision song, we’ll see
Miss Potatohead is up next? 🙂
Next up it is Josefin, who currently lives in Stockholm and dresses up as a potato…seriously
Yosefin will be singing “Love on Top” by Beyonce
She seems very comfortable performing on stage, that time dressed as a potato has given her some practice
Wow, she looks tiny!!
I really like Yosefin’s voice, and she is singing this rather difficult song with a hundres key-changes with ease, although doesn’t go all the way. Just lose all the unnecessary walk left and right on stage, and this would be really good.
I prefer her to Helena to be honest.
Unfortunately this whole performance seems a little flat, her vocals are grand but it doesn’t have the oomph that she needs to do justice to a Beyonce song, I think she could have chosen a more suitable song
“It was not boring”….praise indeed….hmmm
Moving onto artist number 3, its Felica! She will be singing Robyn’s hit “Dancing on My Own”
I just hope she does a version more similar to the original rather than the Callum Scott version that was around last year
Artist 3, its Felicia
“A song by Callum Scott”!!!!!! Oh dear
Felicia has a very clear and strong voice, but still goes off at times. This song is not that demanding, and I personally don’t think she would be able to cope with a more difficult song. I won’t be surprised if we lose her in this round…
Felicia mixing up the 2 versions of the song it seems, I’m not really sure its working for her
I agree Ervin, overall the weakest for me so far
That last note was slightly painful…
Lena is a big fan of everyone – Beyoncé, Robin,… 🙂
The judges are being a lot more critical that I was expecting considering they are only there for decoration.
I think he was complimenting Lena’s articulation….I never thought I’d hear that!
Did she just say – we don’t only have girls, we also have a cock here?!
Next up we have Axel, and he is 20….yes I can’t believe it either
One cock for every 4 hens Ervin, thats the ratio at Unser!
Artist 4, its Axel, performing “You Know My Name” originally by Chris Cornell
Axel has very powerful vocals, but he looks like someone actually forced him to be on that stage, and as if he couldn’t relax. I would still like to see him in the second round due to his voice. Yosefin, him, and Helene are my picks so far…
Alex seems like a confident performer, but a little lost on stage with that song, his vocals were on point and powerful, I’m sure we will be seeing him in the next round
He does really remind me of Zlatan Ibrahimovic with some additional facial hair!
And now we move onto our final potential representative Levina, who splits her time between London and Berlin
I think Stevie Wonder is on commission tonight, that;s the 2nd VT featuring “Superstition”
“I think I’m funny. Others can disagree”. lol
Here we go, its Levina singing Adele’s “When We Were Young”
Well, Levina seems to be the public favorite there! This might be the most completely performance we saw – her voice is very gentle but powerful, and she gave a really emotional performance. I liked it, and would love to see her in round two.
Levina providing a great performance in round one, she has a lovely voice with just a bit of grit to add something special, I’m sure she will make it through to round 2
Levina, Axel and Yosefin for me
I have the same three picks as well, Kyle!
Yay, great minds! Lets hope the German public agree! Don’t forget everyone watching you can give your opinion via Eurovision Vibes to help the public make their decision
Eurovision vibes can be accessed via the Eurovison official app
Barbara! What a woman!
Axel, Felicia, and Isabella are the top three in the app voting!
Some green room interviews now before the result of the first round of voting is announced, Helene looks very unhappy
Now we have a performance from Matthias Schweighofer
So if I understood correctly, the votes of all those who vote via app will not be counted in the final result. They are here only to show the Germans who the “European favorites” are…?
So, the three qualifiers for the next round are: Axel, Levina, and Helene!
Correct Ervin, the votes from the app are just for “guidance”
Congratulations to Axel, Levina and Helene for getting through to the 2nd round!
Now we are getting an introduction to the team behind one of the final songs tonight “Wildfire”
First we have Helena’s version of “Wildfire”
This is the first potential Eurovision song?! Ok…
Well, at least it sounds happy… I don’t particularly enjoy the arrangements of it, and this sounds like a bottom five song to me… Especially with Helene performing it. It’s a no from me.
I’m getting partial flashbacks to Texas Lightning with this version, it all seems very dated. Its okay…..but would do nothing at Eurovision, they maximised the “country” aspect as much as they could for Helene there
And now it is Axels turn to perform “Wildfire”
For some reason, this part of the show reminds me of when the UK was picking a singer to sing “That Sounds Good To Me” in 2010. No matter how good any of these artists are, they are going to do absolutely nothing with this song when it comes to Eurovision.
Axel sang well, but this song doesn’t suit him at all either…
This is already far better than Helene’s version for me, but I still feel the song is weak and hope he gets a chance to do the second one and hope its better!
DO NOT remind me of that moment in 2010 Ervin! I totally agree with what you mean though
So third up will be Levina performing her version of “Wildfire” Only 2 of these acts will move forwards to stage 3 where they will perform the 2nd song “Perfect Life”
I’m starting to think that Levina has this competition in a bag.
This is a more serious arrangement of this song, and far better than the ones we heard from Axel or Helena. Still, I hope the second song is better sounding than this one.
Agree Ervin, this is by far through the most polished of the performances and it seems like a more serious version of the song, I too am hoping for better things with the second song
To be honest, I do agree with the jury, and I would put Helena and Levina through. Axel seemed like he lost all hopes.
I would still have to go with Axel and Levina, Helena is just a mess to me. Axel has the issue of that song not being suited to him at all, all his hopes last on the second song
Now we have a performance from Tim Bendzko performing ” Emmer noch Mensch”
We’ve heard “Wildfire” 3 times now, and I am struggling to remember it now…not a good sign
I kept hearing “wild life” anyways 🙂
And our acts are back on stage for the results, its not looking good for Helene if Germany agree with the rest of Europe
So the two finalists are…
Going through to round 3 its Levina
So now Axel and Levina will get the chance to perform “Perfect Life” and the results from round 3 will decide the format of round 4
First up its Axel performing “Perfect Life”
Well from someone who wrote “Incomplete” and “Skyscraper”, I expected a lot more than this! This is easily forgettable…
Axel sings this song great as well, but should he win with either of the two songs, I don’t see him above 20th…
Already this song to me is far better than “Wildfire”, Axel still doesn’t seem completely comfortable with it, but it has a lot more potential. It actually reminds me of Freddie from Hungary last year
Oh don’t compare this to “Pioneer”, please 😀
Well…I didnt actually like “Pioneer” ….!
And now we have Levina with “Perfect Life”
From the very start, this version of the song reminds me of another song… Can’t remember which one though…
I personally think the first song actually fits Levina better, and I’m now absolutely sure that she will be the one to win tonight.
Apologies for the slight delay there, we are back! The European public are 50%/50% on the Eurovision app
I think the first song is the best one for Levina, but I feel the second song is far better as a song…its a dilemma!
Axel doing “Perfect Life” is my number 1 probably, with Levina’s Wildfire being my 2nd
I love how Lena is taking her shoes off in the background! 😀
A final recap of both songs by both Axel and Levina, before we see who or what will be in the final 2. It could be Axel with both songs, Levina with both songs or Axel and Levina with the same song, or one song each! So many possibilities!
Germany, we have a result
Our first act and song in the final two is Wildfire by Levina
Our second final act is Perfect life by Levina!
So we have a winner! Levina is going to Kyiv! Now round 4 is going to be Levina versus Levina!
Now we have a recap of some of the countries that have already chosen, Belarus, Switzerland, Georgia, Finland, Albania and the United Kingdom
So we have Levina having to sing both songs again, not sure why we are doing this, it seems unnecessary when she has already performed them
Stay tuned everyone though as we still have special performances from Nicole, Ruslana and Conchita to come, and not performing the songs you might expect!
Oh Santiano! The biggest mistake Germany did was not sending them to Eurovision in 2014…
Santiano were incredible I quite agree Ervin!
Here is Levina performing Titanium once more
Sorry…typo, its “Perfect Life”!
I feel this is by far the strongest song, and it would make the better entry for Germany for Levina
I think I’m kinda indifferent about the song she will be singing in Kiev, to be honest… I don’t think she will do anything serious there…
Judges commenting on how Levina has improved on her second performance of “Perfect Life”
For me it has to be “Perfect Life”, but ether way I am disappointed in the songs they have come up with, I can’t see either doing much in Ukraine
And now we are in for a treat! Nicole with Ruslana with Conchita!
SO first up we have Ruslana with a version of Euphoria!
Ruslana could work a bit more on her lyrics…
Nicole is up next with “Merci, Cherie”
Nicole looks simply incredible , stunning lady
Nicole looking very emotional towards the end of that, and now we have Conchita singing Satellite!
She does indeed!
After Nicole criticized Lena for winning in 2010 with this song, I never thought I would see Nicole singing it!
What a fantastic performance!
I can’t believe this show has been going on for three hours now!
Got a feeling we are going to overrun here, another recap and lines still open…
I can Ervin…I can!
I’m hoping that she will come to the London Eurovision party if she half lives in London!
And we have a result!!! Its Perfect Life with 69% of the vote!!!
A huge victory for Perfect Life!
And they are making her sing it again! Poor girl, this is the 6th time she has sung in 3 hours
And there we have it, thank you all for joining us tonight for Unser Song 2017, good luck in Kyiv Levina!
Have a good night everyone, and thanks for joining us tonight! 🙂
