LIVE: Switzerland – Die Entscheidungsshow
by Andy Smith · February 5, 2017
Tonight will see another Eurovision song and act picked for Kiev. Switzerland’s Die Entscheidungsshow takes place at 19:55CET on SRF Zwei and is to be hosted by famous Swiss TV/radio presenter, Sven Epiney.
The winner of this evening’s six-song National Final will be decided entirely by a public televote, plus we’ll also see a performance from Switzerland’s 2014 contestant, Sebalter, with his new single “Weeping Willow”.
Switzerland have won Eurovision twice before, notably with Lys Assia (1956) and Celine Dion (1988). Could tonight’s winner be ‘third time lucky’ for Switzerland in Kiev in May?
Tonight’s competing songs are:
1 Nadya – “The Fire in the Sky”
2 Ginta Biku – “Cet air là” (That tune)
3 Michèle – “Two Faces”
4 Freschta – “Gold”
5 Shana Pearson – “Exodus”
6 Timebelle – “Apollo”
Evening everybody! Who’s joining us for the live blog of Switzerland’s National Final tonight? 🙂
…and we’re off. Some Abba puppets and the late, great Rik Mayall on our screens. Should be fun!
Good evening Andy and to everyone else who is joining us for this live blog!
After the short Abba featurette, we’re into an advert break in Switzerland, before the main show will kick-off in a few minutes. Fee free to comment along with is below, and let us know what your favourites are…
Good old ‘Te Deum’ announces the start of the show, and we’re now onto a strange introduction which looks more like a news and current affairs programme than a NF… We’re now meeting our host, Sven.
Out host starts by explaining how we have come to get our 6 finalists for tonight through the submission process along with the expert panel stages
And tonight’s finalists are giving there thoughts and feelings of what it would mean to them to perform on the Eurovision stage
And here they are! Big crowd introductions for all tonights acts
All six acts are now on stage together, and are having a short interview from the host. It all looks very reminiscent of Eurovision: You Decide so far!
It’s Nadya up first. We’re hearing some impressive operatic skills in her VT/postcard…
Nadya “The Fire in the Sky”
Nadya is centre stage all in black with the focus all on her, some dry ice and lighting complete the stage
It’s a moody start with Nadya stood on a mirrored platform, complete with dry ice and a firey-orange background. She’s dressed in black and we’re seeing some big vocals. It reminds me a little of “Rise Like A Phoenix”
Her vocals are sounding on point and she is doing her best to sell this song, it is very Rise Like a Phoenix in places
Oh..A rather abrupt end though I must say!
Good start to the show from Nadya! Nice orchestral sound to it, and a powerful voice to boot. Think this could do well tonight!
Agreed Andy, a solid start and it is a very competent performance that could do better than expected
Ginta Biku “Cet air là” (That tune)
I think Ginta may have taken some inspiration from Frans from Sweden last year. Lots of words appearing on screen behind her! It’s quite a simple presentation with just her in a white outfit and some video effects of multiple versions of her too.
Ginta making use of holograms and the LED screen and now we are joined by some male dancers
As the song progresses, she’s joined by two male dancers, also dressed in white. They’re also ‘doubled-up’ with the graphics behind her. It’s quite a catchy song, and almost sounds like something that Turkey might have sent in the mid-2000s…
The vocals are sounding okay but not outstanding, the backing singers need some better harmonies
The whole performance felt a little dated, and I would be very surprised to see this winning tonight
We are now having a short break in the performances tonight to see a VT about the Swiss’s past efforts at Eurovision, no mention of 2015 or 2016 so far….
We’ve taken a short break in precedings, and we’re now seeing clips of Eurovision’s wonder years. Unsurprisingly, we see Miss Dion’s face make an appearance too… 😉
Back to tonights final with song number 3!
We’re now back into the show, and see a VT from the next contestant, Michèle…
Michèle – “Two Faces”
Michele is joined on stage by 2 backing dancers and 3 backing singers with some bright disco lights and rotating circle of lights behind her
From the offset, this sounds a little flat and Michèle doesn’t really look that confident on stage. The background is very vibrant and there’s some nice lighting effects around her and her dancers, but I’m not sure it can save her.
This all feels a little disjointed for me, nothing seems to come together and Michele just ends up looking a little lost on stage
The song sounds like something Ariana Grande may release, but I’m not sure how well it will do. She nailed the final big note of the song, so that may get her a few extra points from the public. Hopefully her previousl performance on The Voice: Kids may help her out too.
srfesc is tonight’s hashtage, by the way. You can use that in all of your social media ramblings… 😉
We’re now getting to meet Freschta in her video clip…
Much like Nadya, Freschta appears alone on stage dressed in black. She does appear to have a large golden bird flapping away behind her however
It’s a ballad from Freschta, and straight away it sounds like something Adele may release – with her deep vocals sounding quite similar. The camera gracefully sweeps around her, and there’s some nice starry effects, plus the obligatory wings motif, made popular by Conchita a few years ago.
A golden bird which is reminiscent of a certain Conchita I must say! And now time for a pyro curtain
The climax of the show ends with a golden…erm…’shower’ of pyro behind her, and iit seems to go down well with th eaudience. Dark horse?
A very simple and understated style of presentation there, it did fit in well with the song, but I just don’t know if the song has enough to get the audience behind it
Loving how myself and Kyle’s comments are practically the same. Think we should play a game of ‘snap’ during the show! 😀
Some more classic clips for us now!
Great minds Andy! Maybe we are a snapshot of the swiss audience watching!
And now we move onto our final 2 entries
I’ve just spotted a woman yawning in the audience… Not sure if that reflects her thoughts of the show, or if she’s just tired?
Up next on the introduction VT’s is Shana Pearson, our fifth act of the night!
Shana Pearson “Exodus”
Shana looks quite like a cross between Madonna and Kylie – could be a good omen! The song is quite a ‘banger’ and is quite reminiscent of ‘Euphoria’. She looks good on stage, but feel she needs to move around a bit more to replicate the energy.
Shana sounds slightly off throughout sadly and the backing vocals are not helping, this also feels slightly low in energy for a high-energy song
There’s three backing singers lurking in the background, and stand out quite a bit due to the bright and colourful backdrop, which is possibly something to work on should this be successful tonight. Not a bad effort, but the vocals let it down a touch.
I think the host just compared her song to Justin Bieber, she looked bemused, as am I
That Justin Bieber comparison baffled me too!!
Oh dear, Golden Shower flashbacks from 2010!
Some more clips from past Eurovision’s now, and we’re getting a bit more up-to-date with the likes of Lena on show…
I spoke too soon. We’ve gone back to 1969(!)
And now onto our final entry!
We’re now onto our last song, and it’s from a familiar favourite – Timebelle!
It’s another slow song, but I won’t complain too much as the lead singer looks pretty good on stage! 😉 She’s joined on stage with a drummer and a guy on a grand piano, and some nice production has gone into the song.
Timebelle keeping the presentation simple, but slowly revealing the rest of the bad through clever lighting and camera shots. The singer looks stunning on stage in a figure hugging red dress
The red and black works well, and during the final section of the song, lots of red conetti falls to the stage, with more added into the video backdrop. Another good song, helped even more with the ‘pimp slot’
Timebelle seem like a step up from the other entries tonight in my opinion, everything worked well together on stage and it has the feel of a winner
I think this will do well tonight, but feel that we could possibly do without yet another female-driven power ballad going to Kiev. I think this could do very well. Best of luck to all participants!

Switzerland is showing so much of the 2016 contest tonight, its making me want to watch it all over again!
Being reminded of the wonderful moment Anna qualified in 2011!
And of course Switzerland had a fantastic result in 2014 with Sebalter and he is here tonight!
starting off with Hunter of Stars and we shall here his new song after a brief chat with the host
And now Sebalter is performing “Weeping Willows”
That was great hearing “Hunter Of Stars” again. Loved that one, and was disappointed that it only finished 13th. Now we get to hear his new song “Weeping Willow”
Weeping Willow is another nice jaunty effort from Sebalter!
And now we are heading towards tonights result!
A quick recap of Ukraine’s previous wins from Ruslana and Jamala
And now we are welcoming back tonight’s contestants to the stage
All the performers are now being welcomed back onto stage in time for the all important results!
Here we go….results are in…Switzerland in Kyiv will be represented by….
The winner is TIMEBELLE! Congratulations! See you in Kviv!
A well deserved win tonight for Timebelle for me, they really stepped up tonight and stood out, and it is a far better song than 2015
Her first words…”I don’t know what to say F**K”! She is happy its fair to say!
“Thank you to my beautiful team, We made this moment beautiful” Words from Timebelle’s lead singer, she also thanks her late father
And now we are treated to a reprise from Timebelle, ladies and gentlemen your 2017 Eurovision entry for Switzerland!
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this live stream this evening, its been brilliant to have you with us and we hope you enjoyed the show! See you in Kyiv Timebelle!
