by Melissa Bayly · March 5, 2017
Hi there Eurolovers! Welcome to our live blog of Romania’s Selecția Națională, where 10 acts fight it out for a chance to represent their country at the Eurovision Song Contest in Kiev this coming May. All the action starts at 19.30 CET, but if you can’t wait until then, our Editor-in-Chief, Ervin, has some great interviews posted with many of tonight’s contestants.
Our hosts for tonight are Iuliana Tudor and Dan Helciug, whilst Ioana Voicu will cover all the drama, tension and gossip in the green room.
The running order for tonight’s show is as follows:
- Ana Maria Mirică – “Spune-mi tu”
- Ilinca feat. Alex Florea – “Yodel It!”
- Eduard Santha – “Wild Child”
- Xandra – “Walk On By”
- M I H A I – “I Won’t Surrender”
- Maxim feat. Nicolae Voiculeț – “Adu-ți aminte”
- Tavi Colen & Emma – “We Own the Night”
- Instinct – “Petale”
- Ramona Nerra – “Save Me”
- Cristina Vasiu – “Set the Skies on Fire”
We’re also being treated to special guest performances from Sunstroke Project, Manel Navarro, Timebelle and Abba tribute band Arrival.
Tonight’s result is decided by 100% public televote, whilst jury members Luminiţa Anghel, Ovi Jacobsen, Adrian Romcescu, Paula Seling and Andrei Tudor will provide some guidance to tonight’s participants.
If you want to see the show, the Televiziunea Română (TVR) international live stream is available here. Stay tuned!
Good evening everyone! Tonight it is the turn of Romania to select their entry for Kyiv. The big favourites are Ilinca and Alex, but Maxim could give them a run for their money! It all kicks off in 15 minutes time!
Okay we’re off with a performance by Superchill, an instrumental marching/guitar band.
And we’re off! We start with the opening act, Superchill!
Christinal Vaisu gives a short rendition of Dana International’s Diva
Eduard Santha sings Fairytale
They performed these already in the semi final! So they’re well rehearsed!
Honestly it initially appeared that these performers were doing live versions, but these are obviously mimed!
Xandra singing your very own Dami! 🙂
Yeah Xandra can come back on screen 🙂
The three hosts are singing Insieme!
Okay now the karaoke is done, they’re down to business, talking about the votes and what not
I never knew you were fluent in Romanian, Melissa!
Only on Sundays 😀
And they just finished a live cross to Piaţa Universităţii. Crowd could have been better though…I guess everyone was warm at home watching it on TV ready to send their SMS’s in!
First up is Ana Maria Mirică with “Spune-mi tu”
She has great energy on stage, and I love her hair and necklace. Not a fan of that dress though. Too much sleeve for me. Strong vocals though!
Spune-mi tu means “Tell Me’. This is quite a rocky number and reminds me of 90s Anouk. Ana Maria sings well indeed! Song wise, it’s not bad, but a nice opener.
Key change could’ve gone better though… something sounded off!
I think that’s Ilinca’s father… he seems nervous!
Next up is Ilinca feat. Alex Florea , with “Yodel It!”
And this is the BIG favourite, it won the jury vote last week with maximum points!
This shouldn’t work – rap and yodelling? But somehow it does work… I never thought I would hear something like this ever. Nice surprise though…
Well this is certainly different, I don’t think we have ever had yodelling in Eurovision before, have we? This would stand out a MILE in Kyiv for sure! They perform it really well!
I think so far, that’s the one to beat. Ok I know we have only had two songs so far, but still… 🙂
It’s certainly hard to beat. No one will be able to get it out of their head. And the two of them have amazing on-stage energy.
I think in Kiev 2005 Austria sent Global Kryner with “Y asi” and I’m sure there was some yodelling in that.
Haha, you can see her autocue on screen!
Oh I think you might be right there, Melissa!
Next up is Eduard Santha with “Wild Child”
Somehow I don’t think this is going to be as good as Ace Wilder…
This is the type of song that can sound passable with some headphones, but looks like a mess on stage. Way too much going on. Dancing, awful lighting work, costuming etc. Its a mess.
What on EARTH is he wearing? I’ve no idea what is happening on stage, there’s some really distracting interpretive dance and I’m not even sure there is a tune in this song. The one positive part of this performance is that Eduard is giving it his ALL.
So apparently, these little interviews are with friends and family of the competing singers tonight. This one is Xandra’s best friend and make up artist!
He is giving it his all… in a fur vest, one long sleeve/sleeveless outfit. If you missed it go look for some photos afterward, it needs to be seen…
A good friend of mine wrote this next one by Xandra, so I might be a little bit biased!
Xandra is next up with “Walk On By” and I also know the songwriter!
Well, if this were to be selected it would fit right in! Power ballad performed with a hint of girl-power attitude! She smashes the vocals but everyone’s still got the Yodel song in their head!
Ioana’s in the green room!
This reminds me a bit of Dangerous Woman by Ariana Grande. Xandra looks stunning in a red dress and gives a very sultry performance. Vocally she is fantastic, and I think this will do well tonight. I’m crossing my fingers here!
M I H A I is next, yes the same Mihai that represented Romania in 2006 with “Tornero” is performing next with “I Won’t Surrender”
Not sure why he now spells his name in capitals with spaces though…
He’s wearing a black suit with a lot of white enbroidery on it. It would look great on a set of curtains
The song as it is written would be perfect for him, however from the very first note he does far too much elaborate vocal gymnastics and if anything it highlights how different his English accent is. It would work in a Romanian/English mix.
Next up is Maxim feat. Nicolae Voiculeț singing “Adu-ți aminte”
This next one is another favourite. Expect lots of little Romanian girls to vote for this one.
Wow, off key in the chorus here…
Those pan pipes sound so out of place! They’re not the best of singers are they? Weak and flat and if this wins then Romania can kiss the final goodbye.
The long haired guy from Maxim should really just go back to air guitar, he doesn’t do well in the harmony at all…
Yeah those pipes… Keep thinking perhaps Peru want a stab at an ESC berth!
Tavi Colen & Emma are up next with “We Own the Night”
Again the accent is really noticeable here. Emma has great stage presence and a killer outfit and should come back to the Selectia Nationala with a Romanian song. She’d do quite well I think…
This sounds very ‘Romania at Eurovision’. Emma looks great but Tavi looks like he just threw the first thing he had on. Also, he really should NOT dance.
It looks like a Father-Daughter pair doing a duet…
I do love Emma’s enthusiasm, she’s like every Eurovision fan on the dance floor in EuroClub at 2.30am!
Instinct are next and they will be performing “Petale”
Interesting performance with them starting as wind up dolls. This a really nice ballad with a great melody and they perform it really well. One of the best of the night for sure!
Oh wow I’m loving this! Instinct look great on stage and this is a strong song that finally can rival the Yodel song.
Yeah I think this could do REALLY well tonight!
Ramona Nerra is up next with “Save Me”
Oh wow! This is also a great song that would do well in Euroclub! The stage performance is proper 80’s throwback though with dancers in double denim performing behind a jail bars. Ramona absolutely KILLS these vocals!!!
Oh, something a bit uptempo! This is VERY electronic dance, am loving the production and vocally Ramona is great, especially on the high notes. This is going straight on my gym playlist!
There’s a very informative Wikipedia page about Save Me, if you want to find more out about it!
Cristina Vasiu is our final act tonight with “Set the Skies on Fire”
Christina Vasiu is the one who had fireworks coming out of her skirt a few years ago, if anyone remembers, it was AMAZING.
This time, she has green lasers coming out of her shoes!
That dress and hairdo does her no favours I’m afraid, which is a shame because the song is great and her vocals are on point. And those shoes… oh those shoes!!!
Those dancers did NOT need that make up artist!
That’s a CLASSIC Eurovision chorus! Vocally it was great and I LOVED the middle 8.
Ramona’s being interviewed in the green room!
Honestly, that was a STRONG national final. One of the best of the year!
Timebelle is first up of the special guests!
This actually fits in with the other songs performed tonight. It’s a good performance!
I hear Te Deum again! I think we’re back in business!
The first recap is up!
Oh wow, in the recap, Tavi Colen & Emma’s “We Own the Night” sounds very similar to Sahlene’s “Runaway” from ESC 2002!
START VOTING EVERYONE!!!
“Yodel It” has an early lead!
ABBA tribute band Arrival are playing now
Voulez-vous… (a ha!)
For an Abba tribute band, they’re actually pretty good!
If you were at all curious as to how the votes were going, there’s a countdown timer in the bottom left corner of the screen. Live votes are being flashed on screen during all the interval acts so if your act is super close from winning and you live in Romania you can send in a few SMS’s to help them out in the next 40+ minutes!
I think it’s a bit of a runaway winner, babe, but nice try 🙂
Time for another recap!
And now it’s time for Sunstroke Project!
After a rather long interval act (but good though!) it’s no the turn of The Moldovans!
Manel Navarro is now up! “Do it for your lover, do it for your lover babe…”
Another recap when the voting is closed. THAT’S USEFUL.
Now they are announcing the top 3 in RANDOM order…
The first act in the top 3 is….
M I H A I
Ervin is currently on Facebook live! Capturing all the action from the greenroom here!
The second act in the top 3 is…
The third and final act in the top 3 is…

ILINCA FEAT ALEX FLOREA!!!
Congratulations to them, Yodel It! is going to Kyiv!!!
And we have a winner! It’s Ilinca and Alex!
Ilincia’s very emotional, she’s been crying since the announcement!
Mihai’s being gracious in defeat and congratulating the duo…
Now we have the full rankings!
And now the winner’s song!
And that’s it for tonight, well done to the winners Ilinca and Alex, thanks for being with Melissa and I tonight, all that remains to say is bună seara!
