Udo Jurgens dies at the age of 80

The first Austrian Eurovision winner, Udo Jurgens, has died from a heart attack earlier today.

Udo Jurgens was one of the most notable Evergreens singers and songwriters from Central Europe. He wrote over 1000 songs, and his combined international sales exceed over 100 million records.

He represented Austria three times in the Eurovision Song Contest – in 1964, 1965 and in 1966, when he also managed to win the Contest with his megahit “Merci Cherie”, which was then covered numerous times in different languages.

Udo Jurgens recently celebrated his 80th birthday, and has recently released his last album “Mitten im Leben”.

May he rest in peace.
