From Tenerife with love: Indrek Ventmann speaks about his “Spanish Girl”

Estonian national final “Eesti Laul 2016” will be held in March, and the broadcaster ETV decided to publish the participants list as early as possible to let them promote themselves and also to encourage viewers to watch the show. ESCBubble met Indrek Ventmann who had a bit of free time during his stay in sunny Tenerife to answer our questions! This young singer will perform his song “Hispaania tüdruk” (“Spanish Girl”) in the first semifinal of Eesti Laul on 13th February.

What was your first reaction when you found out that you will take part in the Eesti Laul 2016?

I was really happy when I found out that I am taking part in Eesti Laul 2016. Actually, I was near the pool and I just jumped in.

Can you tell us more about your career and music?

I started singing when I was in High School and that lead to participations in musicals “Evita” and “Grease” in Vanemuine Theatre, Estonia. “Hispaania tüdruk” (“Spanish girl”) is my second song/single. In August there was an Estonian Sport Song Contest, where the song “Läheb lahti” won the 1st prize. At the moment I am performing with my friend Allan Kasuk, who is also the author of the “Hispaania tüdruk”.

Why did you decide to submit your song to Eesti Laul? What does this competition mean to you personally?

This idea happened in Tenerife, where Allan got the inspiration to write and record it and decided to submit the “Hispaania tüdruk” to Eesti Laul 2016. Eesti Laul is the biggest song competition in Estonia and it is a great way to present myself.

In “Hispaania tüdruk” you are singing about Spanish girl. Probably many people asked you already, but I will do it again – who is this girl and what’s the story behind that song?

Right now I am staying in Tenerife. Also author of this song, Allan Kasuk, is staying in Tenerife. It is a cool summer song and it talks about an Estonian boy who is missing a Spanish girl. The part of the Spanish girl in the song is performed by Kaia Oidekivi.

How are the preparations for Eesti Laul going? Do you have some ideas already about your stage performance, outfits etc.?

Everything is in the initial stage but we are rehearsing and sorting things out.

If you win Eesti Laul, would you sing your song in Estonian or English at the Eurovision Song Contest?

I would like to sing this song in Estonian. We have a very beautiful language.

Are you a Eurovision fan? What’s your favorite Eurovision song and why?

Yes, I have been watching Eurovision. I have many favourites but I think last year’s winner song is really good. Mans Zelmerlöw – Heroes.

Do you think Estonia is ready to host Eurovision Song Contest once again?

I think we are, because Eesti Laul 2016 final concert is held in Saku Suurhall. It is the first time when the final concert is being held so big, because interest in this competition has risen every year.

Finally, do you have any message for Eurovision fans who will watch Eesti Laul online?

Stay cool and vote for us!

We would like to thank Indrek Ventmann for his time, and also to wish him the best of luck at Eesti Laul 2016!
