Brooke Borg: “Golden” is about not letting people’s opinions of you become your reality

Brooke Borg is entering the Malta Eurovision Song Contest for the very first time! Her song “Golden”, which she co-wrote together with Christian Schneider, Aidan O’Connor and Sara Biglert made it to the best 20, and will thus compete to represent Malta in Eurovision 2016 in Stockholm.

We spoke to Brooke Borg about her new song, her team, stage plans, and more. Check out everything she told us in this interview right here:

First of all I would like to congratulate you for making it to the top 20! How do you feel about being in the semi finals of Malta’s selection?

It still feels surreal! I am currently busy with all the preparations and even flew out to Sweden to record the backing vocals etc, but it still feels unreal.

How did you decide to enter this Contest this year?

It was a last minute decision made around 3 weeks before the deadline. So unplanned, but it worked out so well! I met incredible people along the way, flew out to Sweden to record vocals, visited Stockholm for the first time and I even wrote a song that I’m very fond of, both lyrically and musically. But I must admit, the song “Golden” is what gave me the last push to enter the Maltese preselection for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Can you tell us more about the story behind your song, and the team who worked on it?

Well, I was on my way to Sweden to collaborate with a group of talented Swedish songwriters, when I was busy discussing how judgmental people can be. I was talking so fondly and passionately about the subject. That was the point when I said “ok, that’s it. This is what the song is going to be about”. “Golden” is about not letting people’s opinions of you become your reality. It is very easy to fall in a trap of wanting to be someone else or feel uncomfortable with who you really are, due to society.

How are you getting ready for the national final? Did your ideas for the stage performance all come together, and how is everything going to look like?

Everything is slowly yet quickly coming together. I don’t want to say much and would like to leave it all as a surprise, but I’m doing my best to fit vocal practice everyday, training at the gym and doing the best I can to prepare myself in the best possible way.

Brooke Borg2Who do you think is your biggest competition to win the Maltese national final?

I cannot name anyone in particular as a lot is based on the performance on the night. I just hope that the best song will win and have the opportunity to represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest.

What would representing Malta in Eurovision mean to you?

It would be a big responsibility and an even bigger commitment to make Malta and the Maltese people proud. On a personal level, winning with “Golden” means the message has found its way to the listeners and viewers, and that, from a songwriters point of view is a big achievement.

What would be your all time favorite Eurovision song?

I would say “Euphoria”, and “Golden Boy” from last year’s contest.

What sort of music do you listen to in your free time, when all you want is to relax?

Definitely John Mayer and Ed Sheeran kind of music.

What do you do when you are not singing?

Mostly working, spending time with family and my boyfriend, and most probably having a good laugh.

Are you engaged in any other projects at the moment?

Right now at this particular moment I am focusing solely on Eurovision, as I want to give my complete attention and commitment.

Do you have a message for all the readers of ESCBubble who will support you in Malta’s national final?

My message to the readers is to not fear doing whatever your heart desires. No matter how crazy or big headed you may sound, Nothing Is Impossible. Also, I would like to say thank you to all those that are cheering for me and “Golden” in the Maltese Eurovision Song Contest.
