After entering Malta Eurovision Song Contest for the very first time last year with “Golden” and finishing in second place, Brooke Borg is back again in this competition, trying to win Malta’s Eurovision ticket for Kiev with her brand new song “Unstoppable”.
We had a great pleasure to chat with Brooke ahead of this year’s Malta Eurovision Song Contest, and she told us more about her entry, her team, as well as how she is preparing for the Final. Read all of that and more in the following interview:
Hi Brooke! First of all, congratulations to making it to the MESC final! How do you feel being once again in the final of this competition?
Overwhelmed, super excited and grateful to be given the opportunity to sing a song I co-wrote on stage again.
Can you tell us more about the story behind your song, and the team who worked on it?
My entry for MESC 2017 is called “Unstoppable”. “Unstoppable” is about battling our insecurities, taking risks and going for it. It describes that time we have failed in the past, which is now stopping us from moving forward in our lives. My team for “Unstoppable” is the same team that made “Golden” so amazing at last year’s MESC. I co-wrote it with my Swedish friends Christian Schneider and Sara Biglert. Aidan O’Connor also helped us out with the lyrics for “Unstoppable” via Skype all the way from Ireland. We’re a crazy bunch!
How are you getting ready for the night of the final?
I am practicing my vocal exercises and my entry every single day, whilst I’m attending gym sessions to keep fit and make sure I look the best I can on stage on the 18th of February. I believe that practice makes perfect, and I want to make sure I sound amazing for those three minutes.
What do you usually do when you are not singing?
When I am not singing I would usually be at work, as I work full time. Besides work I train on a daily basis, in order to keep fit and stay healthy. I am quite a homely person, so whenever I have time I enjoy staying home and spending time with my family and boyfriend.
What do you think of the rule change in this year’s MESC, that only the public will pick the winner?
I think the public has the right to choose whom they want to represent their country in Eurovision. I trust the public will make the right choice, and will choose the best possible ambassador for Malta in Kiev.
Why should you be the one to represent Malta in Kiev this year?
I couldn’t possibly tell you why I should be the one to represent my lovely country over the other contestants, but if I will be the chosen one, I’d hope it’s because the Maltese people believe in me and believe that I could achieve the best possible result for my country in Kiev.
Who do you think is your biggest competition to win this year?
All the contestants have great songs. I genuinely think this year the competition is very diverse, fierce and I am truly honoured to share the stage with so many talented singers and performers.
Are you currently involved in any other projects, apart from MESC?
I am indeed. I have my own band and we perform at a variety of venues together, including weddings and private functions. I am currently also working on an EP with a team of super songwriters.
Brooke, in order to get to know you a little bit better, we have a couple of slightly more personal questions. First of all, tell us what would be your favorite book?
I have read many books but one that I truly loved is Michael Jackson’s biography by J Randy Taraborelli.
Favorite movie?
August Rush, Raise Your Voice, The Notebook, Dreamgirls – so many to choose from.
Your own signature dish?
Typical Maltese baked rice. yummy
In a movie about your life, who would be playing you?
If I had to choose, I’d choose Beyoncé, only so I’d get to meet her in the making.
What would you bring to a desert island?
My phone and a pair of headphones.
Your ideal duet-partner would be?
Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, James Bay.
The last song you listened to was…?
My own song – “Unstoppable” at rehearsals lol.
Thank you very much for your time, and we wish you the very best of luck at the MESC Final!
