Jerusalem Mayoral candidate furious at Host City announcement, calls it “outrageous and incorrect”

Earlier we brought you the news that Eurovision 2019 would take place in Tel Aviv on 14th, 16th and 18th May at the Expo Tel Aviv (International Convention Centre).

However not everyone has taken this news well, particularly the Mayoral candidate in Jerusalem’s upcoming election, Ofer Berkovitch.  Mr Berkovitch is the founder of the ‘Hitorerut in Jerusalem’ political party and the former Deputy Mayor of the city.

He exploded on Twitter deploring the decision as

Outrageous and incorrect. The Eurovision Song Contest must take place in Jerusalem!

I call upon the Prime Minister to activate all his weight to change the decision.

The reaction from the Government itself was more measured. Culture Minister, Miri Regev commenting:

As I said at the beginning, I thought Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, should host the Eurovision, but from the moment that the decision was made to host the Eurovision in Tel Aviv, I had no doubt that the State of Israel and the city of Tel Aviv will host the Eurovision in the best and most worthy manner.
