Aivo Oskis: ‘I enjoy new challenges!’

This Saturday, Supernova explodes back onto our screens as it’s 5th season gets underway to find Latvia’s representative at the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv in May

Participating in the first semi final is Aivo Oskis who first came to prominence in the first season of X Faktoris in Latvia at the end of 2017. Aivo has recently appeared in the Lithuanian version “X Faktorius” and now treats us in Supernova with his song “Somebody’s Got My Lover”

Aivo, it’s great to see you in the contest to become Latvia’s representative at the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv. Tell us a bit about yourself
I started doing music in my hometown called Auce. It’s one of my favourite places in Latvia because of its supportive and warm hearted people. I’m a simple guy who loves music! I enjoy taking on new challenges in life, therefore I decided to participate in Supernova.

Your song “Somebody’s Got My Lover” is co-written by yourself and Ruslans Kuksinovičs, who is known better to Latvian music fans as Rassell. Rassell has released many songs where you have been the featured artist going back to at least 2011, how did your collaborations first come about?
We met because of our mutual friend Sabine Berezina. One day he just gave me a call and offered me to record a song with them. Since then we have work on a few songs. Russell is a very talented producer and we are into similar genres of music.

It was interesting to see your latest collaboration with Rassell “Divas biļetes” was filmed in Tel Aviv – did you get to go out there with him?

Israel is definitely one of the countries I’d like to see and explore and the video makes me want to go there even more, but this time I didn’t get to go, because I had other things planned.

A lot has been made of the fact that there are 4 singers (and 1 presenter!) from Season 1 of “X Faktors” in this year’s Supernova contest, why do you think this is?
I believe that all five of us are opportunity takers and that’s probably the reason why we are there. After any TV show it’s always important to be proactive and work hard, because all the great things come to those who get things done instead of just waiting for a miracle to happen!

Talking more about “Somebody’s Got My Lover”, it has the now-trademark Latvian dirty beats and a great hook – what was the inspiration for this song?
I’m really into these kind of beats right now. The inspiration is a girl from my high – school.

I have to talk about the shirt you wore at the Supernova audition round! Have decided what you will wear for your semi final on January 26th?
I wore that shirt because I was still feeling that summer vibe! And sure, I have my outfit sorted for the semi final, but you’ll have wait and see.

Do you have any plans after Supernova? Any live appearances planned?
After Supernova I’m planning to release some new music. Also I’m planning to go on holiday to Lanzarote for my birthday.

And finally, Latvia have not been lucky in the last couple of years at Eurovision, what do you think it will take to get your country back into the final?
It will happen when the the song is right for that specific year! I think that Eurovision Song Contest is not predictable because often the songs I like don’t get in the final. I think that artists and song authors should not think about it as much, because it takes away the creativity if the main focus is only placed on a specific Eurovision final worthy format.

Thank you Aivo! Watch his entry for Supernova “Somebody’s Got My Lover” and also listen via Spotify here which will count as a vote.
