Jordan Ravi: “I think the song will be a source of comfort to the people”

Jordan Ravi is young Australian singer which is known to the wider audience by participating in the famous TV Show “America’s Got Talent” season 14. With the song “Pushing Stars” he is one of the finalists to represent Australia at Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam. We had a chance to chat with him about his expectations from Eurovision Australia Decides 2020 and plans for future.

Hello Jordan, even though you are originally from Darwin, Australia you gazed the world stage as a participant of America’s Got Talent season 14 where were eliminated at Judges Cuts, how was that experience to you and what has changed in your life since then?
America’s Got Talent was a very special and extremely unique experience. I suppose the biggest thing that has changed for me since then is how much I have grown both as an artist and a person. There is no doubt that I left LA as a better musician and a better person, so I am always thankful for being given that opportunity.

People tend to say that when you perform you combine 2000’s pop music with classic rock and jazz making a fusion of unique performance, what do you think about that?

I personally take inspiration from many different places. The most influential artist for me would have to be John Mayer. On the other hand, my favourite fusion guitarist is Guthrie Govan, so there’s quite a diverse selection of sounds to draw inspiration from. I like to think in terms of a songwriter but also an arranger. I want my music to be accessible to people but also have my music leave some unique qualities that may be slightly unexpected and give the listener something more to wrap their head around.

On your youtube channel you mostly did covers but there was an announcement of EP being released, when can we expect that?
I’m definitely planning on releasing a string of singles very soon. Right now I’m very focused on Eurovision but realising my own music is something I’m very excited about doing shortly after Australia Decides.

What made you apply to Australia Decides 2020?
I’m a big fan of Eurovision, after I saw Duncan Lawrence’s performance of Arcade it definitely inspired me. Seeing him perform with only a piano made me feel it was possible for myself to have a place on such a big competition. I’m not entirely there yet but I’m honoured to be on Australia Decides and I’ll be giving my all on February 8th!

What’s the inspiration behind the song “Pushing Stars”, it sounds like it describes you completely, can you tell us more about it?
The song for me is about loneliness. People go through many stages throughout their lives and I think everyone has gone through a period where they feel isolated and completely lost. I think this song is going to do amazing things for people and will definitely be a source of comfort to them.

You play guitar since  you were 6 years old and the guitar was always your companion will it be the same during your performance at Australia Decides? Can you reveal us something about it?
Wherever I go my guitar definitely goes and you’ll see me with it on Australia Decides without a doubt! The guitar will always be my first love. It’s a second voice for me and an extension of my body.

Have you listen to songs of other participants? If yes then which one except your own do you like the most/is your biggest competition?
I think Casey’s song is a massive contender. I remember first hearing it and thinking the competition definitely won’t be a walk in! Jack Vidgen’s song is also great too. The competition will be fierce.

Have you watched Eurovision before? What is your first memory related to it? Do you have any favourite songs which competed at the contest?
I remember watching Eurovision as a child but for me the most profound Eurovision was seeing Duncan Lawrence perform his song ‘Arcade’ in 2019.

What are your plans after Australia Decides 2020?
I plan on releasing my own original music soon after Eurovision Australia Decides 2020.

Do you want to share something else or you maybe have a message for followers of escbubble?
I’d just like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has supported me! From here in Australia and across the world it really means so much! If you like my song ‘Pushing Stars’ then please vote for me on the 8th of February! I need all the help I can get to potentially compete in Eurovision 2020! Thank you so much!
