Mia Negovetić: “We wanted to make it without bad things and all that deep stuff”

Croatia’s Dora selection show to find their song for Eurovision 2020 takes place this weekend where 16 songs will compete for the chance to win the ticket for Rotterdam. We got the chance to catch up with teen singing sensation Mia Negovetić who will be performing her song “When it comes to you”!

Hey Mia! First of all welcome to Dora 2020, what made you want to enter the contest?

Well, I love music so I saw an opportunity to enter the contest and said “why not?” For me, Dora is going to be among the biggest performances I ever had, so I am really happy to be a part of it.”

Can you tell us a bit about your musical background, you are still so  young yet seem to have done so much with Zvjezdice, Little Big Shots over in the States and a few singles!

Yeah, I have a lot of experience thanks to all of those performances and travels. I started singing (for an audience out of my home) back in 2014. That would begin 6 years of beautiful moments and creative times in my life. The show “Zvjezdice” was kind of a shock for me because I wasn’t expecting anything and I won so I still think of it sometimes and I can’t believe that it actually happened. When I was called to perform on “Little Big Shots” I was even more shocked, that was one of the best experiences in my life and I am so glad I had the chance to participate. I also did the song “Trouble” year after LBS with Dan Richards (former One Direction guitarist). I love the song and I am really happy that it happened, there were a lot of emotions through that studio session.

Your song for Dora is “When it Comes to you”, can you tell us a bit
about the song and the team behind it, Linnea Deb and Anderz Wrethov have a great history with Eurovision songs!

The song is a love story, we decided to “speak” about simple, small, everyday “issues” that a teenager has, because there are many many problems in this world that we could talk about, but we wanted to make it without bad things and all that deep stuff that is going around. Linnea and Anderz are amazing people and I am so glad that I spent a few days with them and made a great song that we all love. Denniz Jam made great production in his studio and also participated in creation of the song. I am honored to be a part, as author and performer, of this great team.

Are you fan of Eurovision? We notice you have sung before with Croatia’s 2016 representative Nina Kraljic on stage before! How was that?

I am a fan and I can’t wait to see all the songs for this year. Nina Kraljić is one of the extraordinary people I met, she has an amazing voice and I really think that she has a lot to say to this world, with her music and appearance.”

Who are your biggest musical inspirations?

“Ariana Grande is the biggest one, I am a huge fan and I love every single piece of her music. She has that amazing voice that I could listen to all day and I am stunned by her vocals. Jessie J is also one of my favorite artists. Billie Eilish inspires me a lot too, I love her songs.”

And following on from that, if you could collaborate with any another
artist who would it be and why?

For sure Ariana, but I would really want to make one with Billie too :). Her songs are so full of emotions and that’s a really special thing.

What do you enjoy doing when not performing?

“Just hanging out with my family, friends and my dog. I also spend a lot of time singing to myself and practicing my vocals.”

What would it mean to win Dora and go on to represent Croatia at
Eurovision in Rotterdam?

I can’t even imagine it. I think that performing in front of that amount of people, it would be a dream come true.

And finally….what is your favourite Eurovision song of all time?

Definitely Heroes, I remember hearing it and I couldn’t stop. I listened to it a lot of times and I got chills all over my body every time. It really has that special unexplainable thing in it, that makes you believe every word that is said.

Thanks Mia, we cannot wait to hear your song and the best of luck for Dora!

We shall have to wait until the weekend to hear Mia’s song “When it Comes to you”, as HRT are keeping the songs under wraps before the live Dora show, so make sure you tune in then to enjoy Mia’s performance! You can also follow her on Instagram here!
