Kenny Duerlund: “Guess now was just the right time for me”

Kenny Duerlund is competing in ‘Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2020′ with the song “Forget It All” and we had the opportunity to talk with him before the final. The National final will take place on 7 March, where 10 songs will compete to win the ticket for Rotterdam.

Hello Kenny Duerlund and thank you for taking you time for ESCBubble! First of all, how was your reaction when you heard you will be at Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2020?
Well, I was massively surprised. The support I met, from friends and tons of other people I didn’t know, was huge. Something I definitely hoped for, but I certainly didn’t expect it. I think it’s important to not take anything for granted, and to stay humble, so even though the reactions were so positive, I think I actually kinda pulled my expectations and my own feelings about everything, in the opposite direction, just so I wouldn’t get too disappointed if it didn’t work out. So I was naturally very happy and touched, when I found out.

What are your expectation from the contest?
I don’t expect much, actually. I think I’m kind just moving along, as each day passes, trying to not “set up in my mind” what it’s going to be, you know? I want to be surprised. But if I have to say one thing, it’ll have to be that I expect to have a very good time. There’s a lot of good people involved in this, and I can’t wait to share this with all of them.

What made you decide to enter in the contest?
It’s just something I have been wanting to do for quite some years now. You know, one of those thing you hear about, or watch on TV, or what not, and think: “Hm, that would be fun. I wonder if I could do that”. And I actually tried to enter some years back, but the song didn’t get picked. I guess now was just the right time for me.

Can you tell us about your song for Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, what it is about? And why do you think your song would be a good choice for Denmark?
“Forget It All” is a song about resetting. You know, we all have baggage, we’ve all been hurt or scared, to the point where it affected us as human beings. Where you can’t quite recognize yourself, and feel a little lost maybe. I believe all people have some kind of a reset button, that kinda just removes all the bad, makes you forget, and makes you want to move on. Sometimes we just need someone else to come in and push that button. I think it would be a good choice for Denmark for two reasons; First of all, it’s something every human on the planet can relate to. Second, it’s very modern, soundwise. Kinda electronic, but still kinda organic. It’s pop as pop is, nowadays. I’ve seen children dance to this song, and I’ve seen 60 year-olds nodding their heads to it as well. So I feel like it’s a song that can potentially hit a quite large audience.

How will be the staging at DMGP2020? What can we expect from your performance?
Haha, I can’t tell you too much about this, but I will tell you one thing though; In regards to my performance, the focus will be on the music, and the singing, and not too much of anything else.

Do you follow Eurovision and have you a favorite song from the contest?
I sometimes follow Eurovision, sometimes I don’t have the time. I want to watch it, but I will have to admit that it’s not every year I have the time to do it. My favorite will have to be “Hold Me Now” by Johnny Logan. It’s actually on an 80’s playlist I listen to in my car, so I hear it a couple of times a week, I think.

Any other plans for 2020? Can we expect new music from Kenny Duerlund?
Well, yes and maybe. Two feature films is coming out later this year, where I’m playing small parts, but I can’t tell you too much about that either, sorry 😄 And uh, as for new music, I’ll have to say maybe. I have something written, I’m not sure when it’s gonna come out. But I’m guessing it will, at some point 😉Stay tuned, and I’m sure you’ll hear about it when it does!

In the end, I want to thank you for your time and please, if you have a message for your fans and our readers here on ESCBubble?
It’s been my pleasure! I want to say thank you, stay tuned, have fun, and I sincerely hope to see all of you in Rotterdam, in May. We’ll see what happens! Cheers
