Nanne Grönvall recovering from thyroid operation and now in isolation

It was only 4 weeks ago she dazzled Sweden, and a certain James Corden, with her Melodifestivalen Heat 4 song ‘Carpool Karaoke’, but now Nanne Grönvall is recovering from an operation on one of her parathyroid glands.

Nanne discovered around six months ago that her calcium levels were too high (a complaint known as ‘hypercalcemia’) and has been awaiting an operation since. Although she was worried about the risk to her vocal chords, we can reveal that the procedure was successful and she is now recovering at home in isolation to make sure she doesn’t contract Covid-19.

In an Instagram post where she reveals her scars, she said…

Thank you to the amazing staff at Karolinska Hospital in Solna. Woke up incredibly grateful around 2 hours after being sedated and have had neck surgery after several months of waiting and planning. 6 months ago my family doctor discovered that I had far too high calcium values in my body and which continue to rise due to overproduction in my parathyroid glands….

Since the glands are so close to the nerves in the vocal chords, there was also a concern about the impact of this during the operation. So I felt a moment of fear when I lay on the operating table and was just about to be sedated. But the world’s most wonderful surgeons and anaesthetic doctors and nurses took care of me incredibly well and an outstanding job.

She went on to call for a payrise for Swedish healthcare staff and commented on their stressful working conditions. She also reflected on the Covid-19 pandemic and the terrible impact on lives and the economy. She continues to recover at home until her throat is healed and whilst it remains necessary for her to be indoors.

We’d like to wish her the best of luck with her recovery, check out the lovely interview she gave us a few weeks ago back in Malmö. Get well soon Nanne!
