Switzerland’s Gjon’s Tears to come back in 2021

Following the steps of numerous broadcasters which have decided to send their 2020’s representative to the contest in 2021 Switzerland announced that Gjon’s Tears will represent the country next year. These decisions came following the cancellation of this year’s contest due to the wide spreading Covid-19 all around Europe and the world.

Although Gjon’s Tears will be carrying the red and white flag to Rotterdam next year he will have to choose a different song as the Eurovision rules only allow songs published from the 1st of September of the year before the contest to compete. This rule wasn’t changed by the EBU and remains the same although the contest was cancelled for 2020.

Gjon’s Tears was supposed to perform “Repondez moi” (French for “Answer me”) on the stage in Rotterdam. Here is how it sounds like:

Switzerland have only won the competition twice with its first victory being in 1956 making it the first country to ever win the contest. Its second victory was in 1988 with the awards winning singer Celine Dion who got famous also thanks to the contest. In recent years the country didn’t manage to qualify to the final on many occasions and even came last three times in the semi final and once again in the final since 2010. Yet it qualified three times and even managed to get to the 4th position in 2019 with Luca Hanni and his entry “She got me”.
