Will Sandro not be selected to represent Cyprus at Eurovision 2021?
Local Cypriot media have been reporting the past few days on the plans of their EBU broadcaster CyBC, those plans consisting of not selecting their Eurovision 2020 entrant Sandro!
Whereas no less than 18 of this year’s artists have been asked back by their respective broadcaster to represent their countries in the next edition, CyBC are alledgedly not going down the same route. Sandro would be the first internally selected artist to not be selected for the next contest.
Cypriot magazine TV Mania disclose that the island’s broadcaster had always intended Sandro to be their 2020 singer, while aiming for either an artist with Cypriot roots or an artist popular in both Cyprus and Greece to send to the Song Contest of 2021!
Sandro (also known as Sandro Nicolas) was born (and raised) in Germany as Alessandro Rütten to an American father and a Greek mother. The German TV viewers got familiar with him when he managed to get all the way to the semi-finals in The Voice of Germany last year!
That same year he was selected by CyBC to represent Cyprus with the song ‘Running’, written by Alfie Arcuri, Sebastian Rickards, Octavian Rasinariu, Teo DK (Greece 2014) and Sandro himself:
CyBC themselves have not commented on the matter so far.
