The Roop Release ‘Discoteque’

The Lithuanian band, The Roop, were selected to represent Lithuania at Eurovision 2020 with their song ‘On Fire’ which very quickly became a fan favourite and one of the bookmakers’ favourites to bring Lithuania their first ever Eurovision trophy.  Sadly of course the contest was cancelled and we will never have a true winner for 2020, however there is good news for fans of The Roop.  They have today unveiled the video for their 2021 song ‘Discoteque’ which will compete in the Lithuanian selection show ‘Pabandom Is Naujo’.

Unlike may of the artists from 2020 The Roop were not internally selected, and will have to compete for the Lithuanian ticket to Rotterdam, but they have been afforded a direct pass into the final of the competition which will take place on 6th February 2021.

Over recent days, the band have released snippets of the song and as of this morning the song is now available to stream in full, including a release of the video which you can watch right here:

THE ROOP’s lead singer Vaidotas said “The new song “Discoteque” talks about personal inner liberation. Rather often we say that we are free and that we live in a free world. But most of our restraints come from the inside. So, this song and movement aims liberate our minds, which contains too much self-criticism, fear of appearing different, reluctance to accept your body, even limiting your attractiveness.”
The main melody line is reminiscent of old folk songs (if sung in legato, however the band presents it in staccato), so “The Roop” brings folk music sound to the dancefloor.
“Part C or so-called bridge of the song is full of mouth sounds which carries us back in time thousands of years ago. It’s a return to the very beginning of us, where we can start all over again,” says band’s drummer Robertas.
The song is called “Discoteque” – without the letter “h”, because it’s a different kind of discotheque.
“It’s not about showing yourself off. It’s more about being with yourself and accepting yourself the way you are,” says band’s guitarist Mantas.
The song comes together with an energetic dance which can allow you to escape and let loose. Some of the moves of the dance were taken from the childhood, some – inspired by legendary Lithuanian basketball player Arvydas Sabonis.
