The Free European Song Contest is back in 2021!

After the cancelation of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, the German television broadcaster ProSieben hosted a brand new alternative format, called the “Free European Song Contest”, which was invented by no other than Stefan Raab, who represented Germany in 2000 and hosted the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Düsseldorf.

ProSieben now revealed that the Free European Song Contest alias #FreeESC, will be back in 2021. Like last year, the event will be hosted by Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst and the German TV host Steven Gätjen. It wil take place on Saturday, the 15th of May, which is exactly a week before the Eurovision Grand Final.

Last year’s list of 16 participants included two former Eurovision participants. Ilse DeLange from The Common Linnets (Netherlands 2014) represented the Netherlands and Max Mutzke (Germany 2004) represented the Moon. The participants for this year’s edition are not known yet.

You can listen to to the first #FreeESC winner, which was Spain’s entry “Like I Love You” by Nico Santos, below:

Will this be streamed on YouTube for the rest of Europe to watch?

Thank you for your question, Silvia.
As far as I know, there was no live stream on YouTube last year and only the performances got uploaded on the MySpass YouTube channel afterwards. There is also the ProSieben live stream but I’m afraid it can only be followed through VPN, if you’re not watching from a German speaking country.
We will keep you posted if there is any news!
