First Rehearsal

Germany’s staging is as loud, colourful and direct as you would probably have expected. Jendrik is looking dashing and cute in a pink vest-jacket with three backing vocalists (who also at points have trumpets they clearly aren’t playing) and a dancer dressed as a middle finger. He’s so spritely on stage, giving each run such a high energy performance. He’s constantly smiling, hits all the camera cuts (there are a lot!).

The backdrop is falling paper balls and ‘mean’ words like horrible falling from the top to the bottom and smashing as he dandily hops around. It’s quite an intense performance, with the dance break having the backdrop in a tug of war battle between the person dressed as a middle finger and Jendrik and the other backing singers/dancers. It actually looks surprisingly great. For other parts of the song the backdrop is paint splashing effects. At the end, Jendrik and his squad run to the satellite stage as he does the radio-esque speaking lines. Solid performance!

Before Eurovision

Germany are another country that decided against inviting back their 2020 participant, in this case Ben Dolic. Instead, they held a series of live auditions which required the participants to plan out their intentions for staging and music videos. One young German chap was definitely up to this challenge and that was Jendrik! Perhaps best known as a local TikTok star with his larger than life personality and snappy video editing skills.

They bought loads of washing machines, threw lots of paint and found the most in your face song to come up with a masterful music video with a deeply important message. Check out said music video here;
