UMK22-contestants will be chosen by a professional jury. Tapio Hakanen, the musical leader of the radio station YleX, will continue as the chairperson of the jury. According to Yle, Hakanen says the following about UMK:
UMK21 was a great success to the participating artists. Blind Channel made the biggest Finnish song of the year, and Ilta, Teflon Brothers and Pandora got one of the biggest hits of their careers. The final show reached 1,9 million people and the media visibility, radio playing and streaming success were bigger than ever before. Hopefully this will inspire as many as possible to apply to UMK. We promise that the experience is unforgettable and takes every artist forward and upward in their career.
In 2021 UMK was a big success. In Spotify the songs of UMK21 have been listened over 47 million times, and in YouTube UMK videos have been watched over 13 million times this year. Blind Channel, the winner of UMK21, represented Finland in Eurovision 2021 in Rotterdam in May, and brought home Finland’s second best Eurovision placing ever, when the band finished 6th in the Grand Final with 301 points. During Eurovision Blind Channel also announced that they signed an international record deal with Century Media Records / Sony Music.
