The submission period for Festival da Canção 2022 has been opened!

Portugal won’t be missing the party in Italy next year, as tonight they have confirmed their participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022!

As usual, they will use their Festival da Canção to choose their artist and song, and just tonight they have both released the rules for next year’s festival as well as opened the submission period!

Once again 20 songs will be selected, divided over two semi-finals. From each semi-final, five songs will qualify to the grand final consisting of 10 songs and there a professional jury and the televoters will determine the results with 50% influence each.

A very noteworthy change is, however, that next year 4 spots of those 20 will go to songs from the public submissions (as opposed to 2 spots being reserved for this before)!
The other 16 songs will be delivered by composers specially invited by broadcaster RTP.

The full set of rules can be found here (in Portuguese!)

This year, Portugal qualified to the final with ‘Love Is On My Side’ by The Black Mamba. They brought their country a very nice 12th place!

Which Portuguese artists do you hope will send in a song for 2022?
