Stig Karlsen on MGP 2022: “I think this is musically the strongest MGP in years… maybe ever!”

Stig Karlsen, the man behind NRK’s MGP and also Norwegian Head of Delegation, has revealed his impressions regarding the upcoming edition of the Melodi Grand Prix. The next year’s Norwegian national selection for Eurovision will follow a similar procedure to previous editions with five semifinals and a Grand Finale.

The Norwegian broadcaster is working hard to bring the contest back to the Nordic country eleven years later. MGP 2022 will once again allow amateur and veteran artists to have the chance to represent Norway at the Eurovision Song Contest. Last year, the Norwegian selection brought us a wide variety of music genres and very well-worked performances and, according to the producer of the show, the upcoming edition will be even stronger. We will be able to enjoy MGP 2021 for six weeks in January and February.

It’s done! 🙏 🙌🏻 I’ve spent months, weeks, days and nights working on finding the artists and songs for MGP 2022. And I have to say! I think this is musically the strongest MGP in years… maybe ever! 🤩

Have gone through more than a 1000 songs, met up with hundreds of songwriters, producers, artists and music business professionals. Held a bunch of songwriting camps, listening sessions and auditions. Spent many many hours in different music studios with the most talented people over the last six months. Analysed feedback from crowds of people in different age groups, with different background, before taken the difficult final decisions on what songs to pick for MGP 2022.

A special thank you to everyone sending in songs, attending the MGP songwriting camps, and lending your time and talent producing music for MGP. Sadly there is just a few artists and songs that will find it’s way to the MGP stage every year, and it’s been very difficult to let talented artists and great songs go. Next year, might be your year 🙏 👏🏻👏🏻🤞🏻 The songwriters, producers and artist are the foundation and the most important ingredient when putting together the biggest music show in Norway. Without you, we are nothing. 🙌🏻

Formal feedback is sent out as we speak, and I will try my best to contact some of you personally to cheer you on for MGP 2023.
Thank you to music producer colleagues at NRK. To Hans Einar Apelland, @sunnysola and @simeneidsvag for the team work, and your valuable contribution.
Thank you to @thewoodsnorway, @arcticrights and @fjordmusicgroup for hosting the MGP camps.
Now for the next chapter with the amazing MGP team. Let’s do this!, he stated

@stigkarlsen

This year, the pop star TIX won MGP and went on to represent Norway at the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 with the composition ‘Falling Angel’. He managed to reach the Grand Finale of the competition, where he came 18th.

How much are you looking forward to MGP 2022?
