Here is the first song of UMK 2022!

The first song of this year’s Uuden musiikin kilpailu (UMK) has been published. You can listen to the song Hurricane by Cyan Kicks here:

Cyan Kicks is an alternative rock band from Helsinki, and the members of the band are Susanna Alexandra (singing), Niila Perkkiö (guitar), Leevi Erkkilä (bass guitar) and Pietari Reijonen (drums). The band was founded in 2016 and heavy rock music, pop melodies and electronic musical instruments are combined in the bands music. Feathers, the first single of Cyan Kicks, was published in July 2017 and their second single Gasoline came out in January 2018. The debut album of Cyan Kicks, I Don’t Love You, was released in August 2019, and that album brought the band a nomination for Emma, which is the Finnish version of Grammy. In total Cyan Kicks has released two albums, and their music has been streamed over 10 million times.

According to Yle, Cyan Kicks describes their music as unique modern rock with fusion of styles:

We aren’t afraid to combine different elements to make our own, distinctive sound. One song might be completely electronic, while another will be seriously heavy, but, at the end of the day, it always sounds like Cyan Kicks, says Susanna Alexandra.

Cyan Kicks’ UMK entry Hurricane is an ideal example of their unique music style. The verses of the song are electronic, while the choruses and guitar solos form the heavier parts.

Finland is famous for its heavy metal bands, and quite often rock music has done very well in Eurovision, even though Eurovision is often described as a pop music competition. According to Yle, when asking what does Cyan Kicks think about the possibility of getting the call to Turin, the band answers the following:

Rock’s always been around, and it’s always been mainstream music, even if it hasn’t always been the centre of media attention. We want to do our part in really keeping rock in the limelight.
