Alibi: ‘We have to think big and aim higher and higher’

Alibi is a group formed in San Marino in 2014 and made up of three members: Enrico Evangelisti (piano and vocals), Riccardo Gasperoni (bass), and Alessandro Zonzini (guitar). The boys have been chosen as one of the six Sammarinese acts who will compete in the Sammarinese Emerging Artists Semi Final on Wednesday 16th February. They were kind enough to give us some of their time last week, and give us an interview in Italian. What follows is a translation.

Ciao Alibi! Thank you so much for speaking with us today! You guys aren’t known all that well outside of San Marino, so would you mind presenting yourselves and tell us how Alibi was formed?

Ciao a tutti! Alibi is a band formed in December about 8 years ago, currently we are:

  • Alessandro Zonzini on guitar
  • Enrico Evangelisti on vocals
  • Riccardo Gasperoni on bass.

Our band got together thanks to everyone’s important passion for music and we managed to remain a family all this time thanks to the dedication we put into this project all the time.

Congratulations for making it this far in Una voce per San Marino! How do you feel going into the Semi Finals?

We are very very happy, we did not expect to go so far but now we have to think big and aim higher and higher, with the hope that everything goes the right way. It could be the turning point of our career and we we are working hard to make this happen!

Who were the biggest influences you had in music at the start of your career?

We had many influences, starting from 90s rock with Aerosmith and Bon Jovi to Imagine Dragons and Negramaro.

How did the songwriting process work?

Our songs have a fairly long creative process, generally one of us has an idea that we share with the others, and then we develop everything together very slowly when it comes to the small details. Often it takes months to finish a song, but when they are finished we feel really fulfilled.

What is your song about? (It still hasn’t been released!)

Everything you want to know about our song you will find out by listening! We like to give a little mystery to our songs, it will certainly be a song that we believe is worthy of the context in which we find ourselves.

Can you share anything about the staging you have planned for your song?

Our performance will actually be very simple, we often let the music speak, we will try to convey all of ourselves during the performance, hoping to connect with the people and the jury.

What would be your first reaction if you guys win Una voce per San Marino and what would it mean to represent your country at the Eurovision Song Contest?

Frankly, I haven’t dreamed about this moment yet. I don’t really know what we would do if we were to win. It would certainly be the greatest recognition we could get as people from San Marino, it would be a dream come true!

Are you guys fans of Eurovision? If so, is there a song or memory that sticks out in your mind?

It is part of our life and certainly when possible we follow it, if we have to give you names in addition to Måneskin, we were very impressed by Blind Channel, even if our favorites remain Miodio [San Marino 2008], who we kinda know.

What are your plans after the Contest? Do you have any new music or shows coming up?

After the contest we will focus on promoting our latest album “Confini del mondo” (Borders of the World) trying to get it heard by as many people as possible and hoping to be able to play all over Italy!

Grazie mille for this! Best of luck in San Marino! Would you like to share a message for your fans or ESCBubble’s followers?

We want to thank you for the opportunity to let people get to know us, we hope to surprise you and to see you at one of our concerts soon! Thanks again for everything!

While we won’t know the new song of Alibi until 16th February, have a listen to their latest single ‘Non ti perdonerò’ (I Won’t Forgive You).
