Enya Magri: "Performing and exhibiting your talent is one of the most magical things"
After using the X Factor Malta for the past few years as their Eurovision selection method, in 2022 Malta is going back to their longstanding national final show Malta Eurovision Song Contest or MESC for short. With that comes 22 hopefuls who will all be competing for the ticket to Turin! Over the next two weeks join us for our series of interviews with the artists in the lead up to the show.
Up first, I had the opportunity to speak with Enya Magri who will be participating with the song “SHAME”.
David: Welcome to MESC! What made you want to take part in the national selection?
Enya: After marking a return to music with my original songs “Safe Haven”, “Summer Lights” and “Feelin”, I thought that it was time to give my musical career a boost. Thus, together with my songwriting team, I started working on the song “SHAME” and decided to submit my song for the Malta Eurovision Song Contest. It has always been a dream of mine to participate in this contest and now that I am one of the semi-finalists I feel grateful for this milestone in my singing career.
David: This year you’ll be performing “Shame” at the contest. Tell us more about the song, working with the team behind it and why you chose this to be your entry?
Enya: As individuals we find ourselves not being able to be who we truly are because of various factors, one of which is shame. Shame of being vulnerable and showing our true colours both good and bad. The song shame talks about how in difficult moments where we are in a battle with ourselves and our own identity, we must forget all our inhibitions and find the strength within ourselves and show what we truly are without any shame. I chose this song to be my entry for the Malta Eurovision song contest because it has a very powerful and relatable message and because it is of different style/genre from what I normally sing.
David: You’ve released a few songs over the past few years, “Feelin’”, “Summer Lights” and “Safe Haven” – when did you first know that you wanted to be a performer? Tell us more about your musical inspirations.
Enya: Performing and exhibiting your talent is one of the most magical things when being an artist. It gives you satisfaction both as a person and as an artist and allows you to express your emotions through music. Even though I have been performing for these past 16 years, I had noticed I wanted to be an artistic performer when I was only 7 years old.
David: Do you have plans to release more music later this year? What’s your creative process like?
Enya: Writing my own music and releasing it is something I really love to do as an artist. It gives me the platform to explore my music genre and share it with the public. Even though the process involves a lot of focus and hard-work, it is very exciting and rewarding. The process initially starts with an idea, and that idea is further developed with regards to music and lyric writing. After the vocals are finalised and the song is mastered, visions for the music video start propping up. The music video is the last step of the process, when this is done, the song is sent to all media platforms, radio stations, etc.
David: Eurovision is huge in Malta! What would it mean to you personally to represent your nation at the Eurovision Song Contest in Turin?
Enya: Being one of the semi-finalists is already a big achievement let alone winning the Malta Eurovision song and representing my country. It would be an honour not only for my musical career but also for me personally.
David: We like to throw a random question in the mix… what is the craziest or funniest thing that you have ever done?
Enya: As part of my studies, I am required to do a number of teaching practice hours, and one time on the first day of my teaching practice, I didn’t realise that I tore my pants, only to be told by a member of staff. As you can imagine, this was extremely embarrassing, especially not having another pair to change into.

The semi final for Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2022 will be taking place on Thursday 17th February 2022 with the top sixteen performances qualifying for the grand final, which will be taking place on Saturday 19th February 2022.
