Kuba Szmajkowski: “I’m dreaming all the time about standing on Eurovision stage”

This Saturday, February 19th 2022, we get to know who will carry the Polish flag in Eurovision 2022, when Tu bije serce Europy, the Polish national selection for Eurovision takes place. One of the 10 contestants taking part in the show is Kuba Szmajkowski, who is hoping to get to represent his home country in Turin with his great uptempo song Lovesick. Even though Kuba is probably very busy right now getting ready for the Saturday’s show, he still had time to answer a few questions we asked him. This is what Kuba told us about his relationship to Eurovision, his song Lovesick, his musical background and some other things:

Hello Kuba and thank you for giving me this interview! At first I’d like to ask what is your relationship to Eurovision? Do you usually watch the contest and what are your favorite Eurovision songs?

I’m a big fan of Eurovision Song Contest from 2015. After this year I’m watching Eurovision every time. In my opinion that’s one of the best shows in the world. I have been dreaming about taking part in this competition since I remember. It’s my biggest dream obviously. My favourite Eurovision song is definitely “Fuego” by Eleni Foureira. I’m listening to this song like every week since she released it. I’m obsessed with “Fuego”.

Could you tell us a little bit something about your musical background? When did you start singing and do you play any instruments?

My music journey started when I was very very young – like 5 years old. I’ve started singing before I knew how to speak. In the kindergarten I was trying to sing with my friends and teachers. I had a lot of support and it was super cute. In the middle school I took part in a lot of music festivals too. After that came up idea to take part in “The Voice Kids” auditions.

Your song ”Lovesick” is really great and catchy song! How was the song born and how would you describe the message of the song?

Lovesick is my first song in English. It was so demanding for me, because singing in english in the studio (where you can hear every single mistake) was not as easy as I thought. But finally Im so proud of “Lovesick”.
What about the message? Hmmm the single is about being lovesick. The idea of this song came up, because of my past experience. I fell in love with someone who’ve made me lovesick. I was a blind guy. I couldn’t see anything which have made me LOVESICK and now I can say it wasn’t cool. Like the lyrics are perfectly describing my emotions:
“But you give me that feeling
 N’ Even though I’m bleeding
I can’t enough of you, like I caught a fever”
I was working on “Lovesick” with my Polish-Swedish team. I’m so so grateful to them.

What kind of stage show can we expect from you in ”Tu bije serce Europy”?

I can’t say anything about the whole performance design. We’ve created a special video how my show will look like. The only one thing I can say now is the fact I’m gonna dance on a stage. The choreography is so simple. I hope fans from Tiktok will love it.

You have participated in The Voice Kids. What made you participate in The Voice Kids and what kind of experience was that?

It was phenomenal experience. I have been dreaming about taking part in that kind of tv-show since I remember. I was such a young boy, I was 15 yeas old only. So the whole situation was bloodcurdling for me. The enormous audience, cameras, my favourite artists like Dawid, guys from Afromental and the legend Edyta Górniak. I always knew that Edyta is my favourite one but finally I have picked Dawid’s team. He was so convincing. He gave me a lot of useful advices. After this adventure I became more confident on a stage – that’s super important when you’re an artist. With hindsight I know it was very important and building for such a young guy.

Was it clear to you from the very beginning that you wanted to sing your ”Tu bije serce Europy” entry in English instead of Polish?

Yep, “Lovesick” was written strictly for Polish selections. I knew that my Eurovision song should be in English. I must say I love singing in English. But I’m thinking about the Polish version.

If you could sing a duet with any Eurovision artist, who would you choose and why?

Definitely Eleni Foureira or Måns Zelmerlöw. Their performances and songs were incredible. When I saw Eleni I was shocked. Dancing and singing in the same time – spectacular! I was like “is she maybe a Beyonce’s sister?”
I remember that Måns Zelmerlöw was singing “Fuego” in 2019 on Eurovision, between performances and results. I enjoyed it too, his version was a little bit slower, but quite nice.

What do you do when you don’t do music?

I love sport! When I was younger I was playing volleyball such a long time. I was a volleyball freak and I couldn’t imagine life without it. I had to leave my school team because I wanted to develop myself in music.

What would it mean to you to win ”Tu bije serce Europy” and represent Poland in Eurovision 2022?

That’s my biggest dream! I’m dreaming all the time about standing on the Eurovision stage. I always wanted to cut my teeth on Polish selections. Im gonna do my best, so please keep your fingers crossed guys.

What would you like to say to our readers and your fans from all over the world?

Please watch my performance 19th of February and enjoy the whole Eurovision this year. Have fun and thanks for the allnice comments and reactions to my song LOVESICK. That’s super cute and I’m so so happy that a lot of you followed me on the Instagram, that’s very building. It motivates me!
