Festival da Canção 2022 is ready to start soon and we had the chance to talk with Pepperoni Passion right before the Semi-finals. The band will perform “Código 30 (code 30)” in the second semi-final, on 7th March. Pepperoni Passion were not invited by RTP, they submitted the song through an open call, where all Portuguese citizens or residents of Portugal could enter the selection, fortunately they got the spot in the contest.

Hello Pepperoni Passion and thank you for taking you time for ESCBubble! First of all, how was your reaction when you heard you were selected for Festival da Canção 2022?
Well we think that the correct terms would probably be : shocked; surprised and stoked. We never thought we would actually be selected but it comes to show that we need to think higher of ourselves every now and then.

I dare to say your group name is out of the box, who came with the idea of this group name and what was the reason behind it?
Honestly the answer is “Why not?”. You might have guessed but… we love pizza. And we were once jamming in the studio and we ordered this beautiful Pepperoni Passion pizza from Domino’s. And one thing led to another. We would call it a match made in heaven.

Your song is called “Código 30” and your telling us this journey about turning 30, a song which everyone can relate at some point but how was this song born? Was specially written for Festival da Canção?
Good question! Actually the song was not written with the Festival in mind. We tend to create songs about themes that speak to us or we feel could be something fun to talk about and try to portray them in our own and light minded way hoping people have as much fun as we do. We had this song stored and collecting some dust when a good friend of ours talked about the submissions process for the Festival. It was the last possible day to send it and here we are.

What can we expect from your performance at Festival da Canção?
We just want to have fun and show what we can do! We think that our song is powerful and hopefully we can channel that same energy to the audience.

What are your expectations from Festival da Canção? Why should Portugal choose you to represent them in Eurovision?
The experience of being in the Festival is already being something unexpected and kind of surreal. Portugal should choose what songs makes them feel better. And if that’s our case we’ll do our best to bring those feels to the whole European community!

Are you guys following Eurovision? What’s your favorite song from the contest?
We are just catching up to everything and haven’t been able to clearly choose a favorite song. There are so many great artists and bands that it’s kind of hard to pin point who’s the best!

Any other plans for 2022? Can we expect new music from Pepperoni Passion?
2022 started off in great fashion and hopefully better things will follow. You should expect more projects coming from us. There’s a lot more from where “Codigo 30” came from.
