Morrissey on almost representing the UK

Morrissey has spoken about how he almost represented the UK at Eurovision back in 2007.

The singer and songwriter who also fronted the band The Smiths told Hot Press Magazine that he also had a song ready, adding:

“Yes. I was all prepared with [the song] ‘I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris’.

At the time, the UK chose their act through the National final ‘Eurovision: Making Your Mind Up’. A number of other well known artists were also rumoured to be interested in representing the UK that year including Ace of base,Carol Decker and Scissor Sisters.

A BBC spokesperson has since confirmed the story around Morrissey, telling the UK newspaper The Independent:

“We were in discussions with him and other artists, and he had been genuinely interested, but the timing wasn’t right.”

Morrissey went onto to release the song ‘I’m throwing my arms around Paris’ two years later in 2009, which reached Number 1 in the Scottish charts, Number 21 in the UK, 26 in France and Number 58 in Sweden. You can see the video for the song below:
