The submission window for Melodifestivalen 2023 has officially closed and SVT reports a huge interest from Swedish and international singers, composers and producers. A total of 2,824 songs have been submitted for the Swedish national selection, which is the highest number since 2012 (3,458 submissions). For comparison, there were only 2,530 songs submitted to Melodifestivalen 2022. A selected jury will now listen to all of the songs and an official list of the 28 selected entries will follow.
Karin Gunnarsson, the producer of Melodifestivalen, has stated her joy and excitement about the increasing interest in the competition:
Incredible! Wow. I am so proud to be able to work with Melodifestivalen and that the interest in the competition is increasing. Participating in Melodifestivalen really has impact. Many of the competing entries have become big hits. I think that is very exciting for artists and authors!
Furthermore, she started that the work of listening and sifting began, that they were eager to select a strong and entertaining starting field and ensured that every single contribution would be given a fair chance.
Gunnarsson’s comment on the success of the participating entries was just confirmed recently again, when the most recent winner of Melodifestivalen, Cornelia Jakobs, won the Breakthrough Of The Year award at this year’s Rockbjörnen, which is one of the biggest music awards in Sweden. Cornelia also won the Song Of The Year award for “Hold Me Closer”, with which she won Melodifestivalen and went on to represent Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022, where she finished in a sensational 4th place.
A total of 28 entries are going to compete in Melodifestivalen 2023. The jury will select 14 songs from among the submitted entries, the other 14 entries are selected by SVT during the autumn. Later this fall, it will be announced which songs and artists will compete in Melodifestivalen 2023.
