Slovenia to select their Eurovision entrant through EMA 2023

A month ago RTVSLO confirmed its participation at the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, which will take place in Liverpool next year. As we’re getting closer and closer to the proper start of the Eurovision season, countries are slowly revealing the way of selecting their representative, who’ll wave the flag in United Kingdom, in May 2023. This time we have some news coming from Slovenia – and it seems like Slovenia will again choose their participant through their traditional natinal selection – EMA 2023.

Head of Entertainment Program at RTV Slovenija, Vanja Vardjan, recently gave an interview to popular Slovenian magazine – Svet24, where he confirmed that Slovenian broadcaster will again use their national selection in order to select Slovenian representative for 2023.

Svet24: This year, Slovenia has already confirmed that it will participate – will we choose our representative at the EMA again?

Vanja Vardjan: Yes.

Vanja Vardjan also gave us a little insight about the costs, regarding Slovenian broadcaster participating at the Eurovision Song Contest:

The total costs are 208 thousand euros, of which a little more than 89 thousand euros are spent for EMA and a little less than 119 thousand euros for the performance at the Eurovision Song Contest. These costs cover the entire EMA project and in the second part the preparation and performance at the Eurovision Song Contest. Included in these costs are accommodation costs (hotels and their prices are determined by the organizers), travel costs, all costs related to the performance itself (concept, choreography, music and arrangements, props, outfits) and the participation fee. At the same time, it is worth pointing out that our costs are among the three lowest among more than 40 delegations every year.

There is another Eurovision event coming up by the end of the year – Junior Eurovision Song Contest, which will be in Yerevan, Armenia this year. Vanja Vardjan also answered the question about why Slovenia isn’t performing at the Junior Eurovision:

Because it is a music competition that is watched and attended by two-thirds fewer countries than the Eurovision Song Contest.

It is known that Vanja Vardjan is a great supporter of Slovenia’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest.

As said, it is the biggest music event in the world, which is watched live by more than 300 million people, and even more online, and if this is not a sufficient number to promote Slovenia and its music, then I really don’t know what else could be. On the other hand, we also encourage solemn musical creations, as more than 100 musicians and groups submit their compositions to EMA every year.

Before we reach the upcoming Eurovision season – let’s have another look at the current Slovenian represetatives – LPS won EMA 2022 with their song ‘Disko’. LPS were eliminated in the first semi-final after finishing in last place. Take a look at their Eurovision performance below:
