Maria Christina: “It is very important to steer clear from any technological distractions”

Malta Eurovision Song Contest entered it’s fourth week. Last Friday we saw the remaining quarter-final acts perform and soon it is expected for the semi-finalists to be revealed. Another artist who competed in third quarter-final with whom we got a chance to talk with is Maria Christina who performed the song “Our Flame”.

Hello Maria Christina, Can you tell us more about your musical beginnings and do you remember which songs have you first performed?
When I was about 4, I used to grab a hairbrush and start singing and dancing in front of the mirror. If memory serves me right, the first song I ever sang was Aqua’s Barbie Girl. In my opinion, it is still an absolute bop in 2023 ❤️

What inspired you to take part at MESC 2023?
First things first, I have always been a fan of the Eurovision Song Contest; it is an experience which I want to aim for, as I feel like it’s the next step for me, in my singing career. When I was approached with ‘Our Flame’ for the MESC, I thought to myself that this is something I would like to submit, and the rest is history.

What does your entry “Our Flame” mean to you?
Our Flame is a song which a lot of people can easily relate to; it talks about the burning flame, the love that two people have for each other, and that despite several obstacles, it burns bright still. It is special to me, because it made the cut and has given me the chance to share my talent on a bigger platform.

What can we expect from your performance?
I hope that my performance will be enjoyed by many people. My team and I are working on sharing the meaning of the song as much as possible, but for the time being, I would rather keep the staging a surprise.

You had a chance to perform at many festivals and stages including the one of Miss Universe Malta which took place two years ago, how was that experience and which performance you had so far is your favourite?
Singing during the opening ceremony at Miss Universe Malta a few years ago was an experience which I will cherish in my heart, but if I had to point out one experience in my career, it would be taking part in the Malta Junior Eurosong and finishing 2nd with the song “Love to Share”, a duet with my dear friend Justine Delmar.

What would it mean for you to represent Malta at Eurovision Song Contest 2023?
Representing Malta would be a dream come true ❤️ I am incredibly happy to have made it this far already, so I won’t think too far ahead. In my eyes, all of the participants are winners; because we are putting our best foot forward.

Do you watch Eurovision regularly? What’s your favourite song from the contest?
Yes, I watch the Eurovision Song Contest regularly. One of my favourite songs from the contest is “Euphoria” by Loreen.

What do you do when you are not singing? Any hobbies?
In my free time, when I am not singing, you will most likely find me hanging out with my family and friends. I believe that it is very important to steer clear from any technological distractions, especially social media. With Malta being particularly warm, especially during the summer months, days by the pool or the beach are a must.

What are your plans after MESC 2023?

After MESC 2023, I plan on taking a bit of a breather, as this experience has kept me on my toes, but then it’s back to the drawing board with my team, to discuss new material and future plans in music.

Thank you so much for your time Maria Christina. We wish you the best of luck at MESC 2023. Do you want to share something else or you maybe have a message for readers of escbubble?
