This Saturday Romania will find out who will represent them in Eurovision 2023 and our editor Marco had the chance to talk with Maryliss about her participation in Selecția Națională 2023. The winner of Selecția Națională will be selected only by the public. You can check out our interview with Maryliss below.

Hello Maryliss and thank you for taking you time for ESCBubble! First of all, how was your reaction when you heard you will be at Selecţia Naţională 2023?
When I heard that my song has been selected, of course I was very happy and excited. Being part of Eurovision is one of my wishes for some years now.

What made you decide to enter Selecţia Naţională and what are your expectations from the contest?
Well, there’s this saying: “if you don’t play you don’t have a chance to win” so, as I said earlier I’ve wanted this for some time and this year everything fell into place, so here we are.

Your song is called “Hai vino”, can you tell us what’s the message behind it?
Each of my songs have a story. In “Hai Vino”, the story reflects my present and my life. It’s a love song, a happy and joyful song. It’s my way of expressing my gratitude and fulfillment. It makes me happy every time I listen to it and from what I’ve test it on my friends it had this effect on them too, so I guess as a writer my mission is accomplished. I can’t wait to share it with the public and hear their opinion about it as well.

How will the staging be at Selecţia Naţională 2023? What can we expect from your performance?
Huh, a very good question. We’re still working on the show plot, at this time, but as a little inside, I can tell you that we’re not thinking about something over the top, focusing more on transposing the song in a close-to-truth visual realm.

You participated in “The Voice of Romania”, do you think that TV experience helped you prepare for the National Selection?
Of course, I think every experience helps you become better as an artist. Even from something bad you get to learn something, in the end. Voice of Romania was an awesome experience who made me consider my options and opened this amazing journey of being the writer of my own songs.I remember after the contest I started writing and working in the studio and after 2 years, I released my first singles: “In Urma Ta”, “Cafea Arsa”, “Mii de soapte” and “Copil ,macar o zi”, produced by Artonic Productions from Timisoara, lead by Ovidiu Claudiu Moldova who produced almost all of my songs and Silviu Dan Iliescu who took care of the live part, recording instruments for the songs.

This year the public will choose the winner of Selecţia Naţională, is this the right decision or should they bring the jury panel in the final back again?
I really like this, it will be very challenging for both sides. The public will have a very big responsibility and will have to choose very wise, because what they will vote is what they will get. There will be nothing hidden, no one to blame after. We will be for them and they will be for us.

Do you follow Eurovision and do you have a favorite song from the contest?
Yes, I followed the contest and one of my favorite songs from Romania is Dora Gaitanovici’s “Ana” and from 2018, The Humans with “Goodbye”.

And any other plans for 2023? Can we expect new music from Maryliss?
Yes, I have a lot of plans for 2023.The first one is to release my first album, which will happen very soon, promote it and go touring with my band.

Thank you for taking your time to know me better. My message to all our readers is to vote from their heart, which song they like more. In the end what makes a good song is the message, a simple and catchy melodic line that’s easy to remember. Less is more even in music and keeping it simple seems hard sometimes, when it comes to writing songs. From my experience as a songwriter, until now, simple songs are the hardest to make, so they should keep that in mind.
