One third of KEiiNO – the supergroup that represented Norway in the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest – Tom Hugo, has just released his brand new single, titled “Royal”. This is the second song from his upcoming album, titled “Eden”, which will be released later this year.
Tom wrote “Royal” together with his husband, and explains that the song is inspired by Tom’s own childhood story, and about growing up in a conservative part of Norway. When speaking about the song, Tom stated:
Isolated in the sleepy hometown of mine in Norway during the pandemic, I spent some of the extra time at hand writing a collection of songs inspired by stories from our own and other LBGTQ+ persons’ lives. As I come from a pretty conservative part of the country it’s common that anyone different from the majority can still be seen as ‘outcasts’. I wanted to write songs which normalise being different, and shine a light on anyone struggling with fitting in.

Tom Hugo tried to represent Norway as a solo artist back in 2018, when he competed in Norway’s Melodi Grand Prix with “I Like I Like I Like”. The following year he came back as a member of KEiiNO, won MGP with “Spirit In The Sky”, and went on to represent his country in Tel Aviv. In the Eurovision Final, they won the televote, but due to a low jury score, they finished in 6th place overall.
