Joanna Lumley will be the UK’s spokesperson in Malmö
In the last few minutes, it was revealed on BBC One’s The One Show by UK commentator Graham Norton that TV icon and activist Joanna Lumley will present the 12 points from her country’s jury in the grand final on Saturday the 11th May.
Most known to Eurofans as Patsy Stone from the 90s BBC sitcom Absolutely Fabulous, Lumley’s varied career has spanned over five decades. Her acting roles have included starring in dramas such as The New Avengers, Sapphire & Steel and Finding Alice, a stint in soap opera Coronation Street, and even the James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. She’s also been very well known for her travelogues, as well as philanthropy for the Gurkha Justice Campaign, which gave Nepalese veterans of the British Army the right to settle in the UK in 2008. Now 78 years old, she’s more recently worked with Survival International.
Recent UK spokespersons have included media icons such as TV chef Nigella Lawson, who gave her 12 points in French to Sweden in 2015, 1997 Eurovision champion Katrina Leskanich and, last year, sketch comedian Catherine Tate.
The United Kingdom, as one of the Big Five, has qualified automatically for the grand final, and this year’s representative Olly Alexander will do a showcase performance of Dizzy in the first semi-final, between Ireland and Ukraine.
