Adrian Macéus: ‘It’s important to remember why you fell for each other and go back to the first time when you fell in love’

Few weeks ago our very own Edita heard from Swedish-Polish singer and actor Adrian Macéus, who’ll be hoping to represent Sweden at Eurovision this year with his song ”Vår första gång”. Among other things, he told us about his hobbies, also preparation for Melodifestivalen. See below for a full conversation.

Listen Adrian’s song here:

Firstly, for our readers who don’t know you, how would you introduce yourself and your music?
My name is Adrian Macéus and I am half Swedish and half Polish. From an early age I noticed that I loved singing and performing. I started my career as Billy in Billy Elliot the Musical. Since then I have played leading roles in Swedish films and series, dubbed several Disney films such as Coco and Frozen 2. I have also released music, both in Swedish and English. Now I am completely focused on Swedish and recently released a song in the direction I am in, it is called “Kär nån annanstans”.
This is your first time in Melodifestivalen, how do you feel about it? Who encouraged you to participate?

I always watched Melodifestivalen when I was a child, but the idea of participating never hit me until a few years ago. And when we had written the song ”Vår första gång” and thought about Melodifestivalen it felt so right. A perfect song to showcase me as a musician and artist.

How Vår Första Gång came to life? What is the meaning of this song?
The song is about being so in love that it feels like life and death. And how fragile it can be! I can recognize myself in my relationship. You’re young and it’s very new. When everything is good, everything feels so good and when you face adversity, it feels like your whole world is collapsing. And in those moments, it’s important to remember why you fell for each other and go back to the first time when you fell in love ”Vår första gång”. Because that feeling is the only one that matters.
How do you prepare for selection and what could you say for us about your upcoming performance at Melodifestivalen?
I’ve been rehearsing a lot. I´m preparing myself as much mentally as possible considering how many millions of Swedes are watching. My number will have a lot of dynamics, very intimate and small and very big to get the arena feeling.
Winning Melodifestivalen would mean you can represent Sweden in Eurovision. What would it mean to you if it happened? And what would be your message to Europe?
To represent Sweden in Eurovision with a Swedish song would have been so cool. Languages are so beautiful and sometimes you forget that a large part of the melodies in a song have their own beautiful language. You must not forget that. So my message to Europe would be that even though you may not understand the words, the melody itself has its own language. That’s what people feel in their heart that matters.
What do you think is the recipe for success in Eurovision?
A catchy song and a performance that no-one will forget.
What is your favourite Swedish entry in Eurovision? And what is your all time favourite Eurovision song?
Euphoria with Loreen. But my all time favourite is Slimane – Mon Amour. WOW!! And I don’t understand French but as I said the melodies has there own language. That´s what I feel!
What do you do when you aren’t performing? Any hobbies?
I am an actor besides doing music. But I also love to play the piano, the guitar and drums. Otherwise I am very sporty. I love football, golf, padle, but what I do most in my free time is writing songs and produce music. That’s what I love.
Thank you for your time. Do you have a message  for our readers?
Thank you guys!! My message is like I said before, it’s okay if you don’t understand Swedish, but you will understand the feeling and all the emotions through my melodies and my performance. And also, remember to spread love!! That´s all from me!!

Adrian will perform at Melodifestivalen on the 1st of February.
