Here is the fifth song of UMK25
The fifth song of this year’s Uuden musiikin kilpailu (UMK) has been released. You can listen to the song ”Puppy” by One Morning Left here:
One Morning Left is a five-member metalcore band founded in 2008. Members of the group are Mika Lahti (vocals), Leevi Luoto (vocals, guitar), Miska Sipiläinen (bass, backing vocals), Dennis Hallbäck (drums) and Juuso Turkki (guitar, backing vocals). The story of the group began when Lahti met Teemu Rautiainen from Jyväskylä in the Finnish social media service IRC Galleria. They realised they had a similar music taste, which led them to found One Morning Left.
One Morning Left released its first EP ”Panda Loves Penguin” in 2008 and the following year they went on their first European tour. In 2010 the band made a recording deal with Spinefarm Records, and in 2011 their first full-length album, ”The Bree-Teenz”, was released. The second album of One Morning Left, ”Our Sceneration”, was recorded during summer 2012 and was released in February 2013.
The band’s third album, ”Metalcore Superstars”, came out in 2016. The album included the hit single ”You’re Dead! Let’s Disco!”, which has been streamed over 3,3 million times on Spotify. ”You’re Dead! Let’s Disco!” became particulary popular in Japan, and the band’s gigs in Tokyo sold out.
One Morning Left has been a warmer for example for Amaranthe, Machinae Supremacy, Turmion Kätilöt and Adept, and the band has been on tours for example in Germany, Iceland, Japan, Baltic Countries and Russia. In 2022 One Morning Left was on European tour with UMK-winner Blind Channel and the German band Electric Callboy. Nowadays, the band makes music under the German record company Arising Empire.
According to YLE, One Morning Left describes themselves as ”a hyperactive, boundary-pushing feel-good act”. Their unique sence of humor sets them apart from other Nordic metal bands.
”Musically, we rely on the 80s and 90s, and we do not take ourselves too seriously. Sometimes, people look at you in a funny way if you mess around too much. You can dance to the beat of our music, and that’s fantastic”, Leevi Luoto says.
The band tells YLE that applying in UMK had been in their minds for quite a long time:
”We already spoke with our previous drummer that UMK would be a great experience. After meeting Kiro, who produced Cha Cha Cha for Käärijä, we began to think about making an UMK song with him”, Mika Lahti reveals.
The UMK-song ”Puppy” is exactly what the name suggests. The song is, very simply, about a puppy.
This is what the expert jury of UMK25 had to say about ”Puppy” by One Morning Left:
It is impossible to listen to Puppy without a reaction. Modern metal and dance elements meet beautifully in the song. The song sounds angular and edgy, but at the same time it is full of joy and the chorus is really catchy. The three-minute song is loaded with different musical hooks. It is easy to imagine a sold-out Nokia Arena singing this song in February.
