The second song of this year’s Uuden musiikin kilpailu (UMK) has been released. You can listen to the song ”Hitaammin hautaan” by Nelli Matula here:
Nelli Matula is a singer-songwriter from Espoo. She comes from a musical family: her father plays piano and guitar in addition to singing, her mother plays violin and her older brother plays clarinet and jazz-piano. Matula started dancing hobby at the age of three. She started playing recorder before she entered primary school, but later she changed her instrument to clarinet. Matula has also studied playing classical transverse flute and pop/jazz-singing in the Espoo academy of music, and in 2017 he graduated from Helsinki Pop & Jazz Conservatory. In addition to her musical education she has also graduated to confectioner.
In 2015 Matula and producer Johannes Naukkarinen wrote a song ”Kato vaan”, and the demo of the song was sent to record company Rähinä Records. The company liked the song and made a recording deal with Matula in spring 2016. ”Kato vaan” was released in July 2016, and Matula’s second single ”Lemmikki” came out in October 2016. ”Lemmikki” became a big hit song, and it secured Matula’s place in the Finnish music industry. In spring 2017 Matula released a song ”Hula hula” with UMK23 finalist Robin Packalen, and also that song became a big hit.
Matula’s debut album ”Jumalatar” was released in August 2019, and it was nominated for the Pop of the Year award at the Emma Gala (the Finnish Grammy). In 2021, Matula joined Universal Music Finland, and her second album ”Kiltti tyttö” was released the following year.
According to YLE, show is very important to Nelli Matula, and it was the show element that made Matula apply for UMK:
My dream is to become so big as an artist that I can perform at arenas. This is a good place to start, because there’s no bigger show that UMK in this country.
Matula’s UMK song ”Hitaammin hautaan” is meaningful to the artist, as it describes details from her personal life. The song is a reflection of her desire to change the direction of her life and find new meanings.
