Here is the seventh and final song of UMK25

The seventh and final song of this year’s Uuden musiikin kilpailu (UMK) has been released. Listen to the song ”Ich komme” by Erika Vikman here:

Erika Vikman is a 31-year-old singer-songwriter. She was born and grew up in Tampere, and her passion for music and performing was born at a young age. She won her first singing competition in 2008, when she finished first in the girls’ series of Tangojuniori-competition. In 2009–2010 Vikman played the role of Iira Ström in YLE’s TV-series Parasta aikaa

In 2013 Vikman entered the seventh season of the Finnish Idol, where she reached the live shows. Two years later she participated in the Finnish tango singing competition Tangomarkkinat, finishing second. A year later she participated in Tangomarkkinat again, this time winning the contest and becoming the Oueen of Tango 2016.

Vikman’s debut single ”Etkö uskalla mua rakastaa” was released in 2015. The first single she released under a big record company was ”Ettei mee elämä hukkaan” in February 2017. During 2017 Vikman also released the singles ”Säännöt” and ”Jos osaisin sanoa ei”.

In 2019 Vikman made a recording deal with Warner Music and Mökkitie Records, and in 2020 she participated in UMK with her song ”Cicciolina”, finishing second. In the spring of 2020 she also participated in the first season of Masked Singer Finland with her character Ampiainen (Wasp), finishing third.

UMK20 turned out to be a turning point in Vikman’s career. After ”Cicciolina” she has released a large number of hit single’s, including ”Syntisten pöytä”, ”Häpeä” and ”Kateus”. Vikman’s debut album ”Erika Vikman” came out in August 2021, and the album reached the top of the Finnish album charts.

”Cicciolina encouraged female artists to be bolder. Female artists tend to be put inside a certain mould. You must not reveal too much, otherwise you get labelled a whore. Someone had to pop the cork to let the champagne flow!” Vikman says to YLE.

According to YLE, Vikman’s music resonates with many Finns, and she has fans from all over the country, from Helsinki Metropolitan Area to small municipalities. The message inside her music is clear:

”People should be loved exactly as they are. When people are allowed to be themselves, they are free and happy”, says Vikman.

Vikman and UMK have a long history together. After finishing second with ”Cicciolina” in 2020, Vikman returned to the UMK stage a year later as a guest artist, when she performed in the opening act together with UMK21 host Antti Tuisku. Last year Vikman and Eurovision 2023 runner-up Käärijä performed their duet song ”Ruoska” as one of the interval acts.

Vikman tells YLE she had initially thought she wouldn’t return to UMK as a contestant. However, the plans changed when she made a song wish while working on her next album with the producers Chisu and Jori Roosberg. That was when the UMK entry ”Ich komme” was born;

I asked Chisu and Jori to make a Eurovision-type song for me. They asked me directly if I wanted to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest and that’s where it all started!

This is what the UMK25 expert jury said about Erika Vikman and her song ”Ich komme”:

Ich komme feels like a piece of art that takes Erika Vikman to a new level. The song combines traditional Finnish disco with a remarkable composition and lyrics, wrapping it up with the rave aesthetic of electronic music. The song is original and so approachable that the lyrics of the chorus will surely catch you at the first listening. The climax, pun intended, of the song is one of the most exciting in UMK’s history.

Now that all of the UMK25 songs are out, it’s time to ask YOU which song do you like the best! You can vote for your favorite in our UMK25 poll here:
