Lucas Bun: “I think the public will appreciate going down a few gears for a moment”

In the last few weeks, our own Joe B heard from Lucas Bun, professional horse-rider-turned-singer-songwriter who’ll be competing at Benidorm Fest 2025 with the song Te escribo en el cielo, a heartfelt tribute to his deceased mother. See below for the full conversation, which includes details of Lucas’ stage performance, his writing style and his love of animals, among other things.

You can also remind yourself of Lucas’ song by watching below, and vote in our national final polls at the end of the article! Lucas Bun will perform in the first semi-final of Benidorm Fest on Tuesday 28th January at 10:50pm CET on La 1 de RTVE.

Thanks for putting aside some time in your busy agenda to chat to us, Lucas! How are preparations for Benidorm Fest going?

Thanks for reaching out. Prep for the “gran certamen alicantino” has been intense but exciting. I’m dedicating so much time to reassure myself that every detail is perfect. Above all, because I’ve brought such a demanding song vocally, I’m centring on keeping my voice in check.

Before we speak about your music career, I need to mention that, once upon a time, you were a professional horse rider. How did that come about, and what provoked the decision to thenbecome a singer-songwriter?

My career as a horse rider was a really important part of my life. The horses taught me so much. It came about one day, in such an unexpected way, when my mum took me to a riding centre and from that day on I didn’t want to do anything else, I was so intensely attached to it. Music was always there, and there came a time when I had to decide whether I stick with horses or I got fully involved with songwriting. The latter won out.

According to music critic Jordi Bianciotto, your music contains “emotional melodies and avant-garde electronic sounds”. What inspires you when you write music, and which of your songs best describe this style?

The inspiration for my music comes from all the songs I listen to and from human emotion. Above all, I like it when a melody excites and surprises. I think my style is difficult to define in one word or one song. Also, I think that I’m constantly on the lookout for new things, so it’s difficult to pigeonhole me. All my songs represent my style to one degree or another.
Why did you decide to apply for Benidorm Fest this year?

I decided to go for Benidorm Fest because I see it as a huge opportunity to connect with the public and leave my mark on this truly historic music festival. Competing with such a personal song makes me especially excited.

Okay, now let’s talk about your song, Te escribo en el cielo. I recognise the personal sentiment you’ve put into the lyrics and the melody of this emotional ballad, but for the fans who don’t speak Spanish, what story does the song tell?

Te escribo en el cielo (“I’m Writing To You In The Sky”) is an emotional journey through longing and nostalgia, mixing hope with loss. For those who don’t speak Spanish, I’d say that the song speaks of the profound connection that exists between all of us beyond space-time and absence.

You’re quite lucky in that, in this edition of BF, most of the songs are much more up-tempo (basically, there are more bangers than ballads). What qualities does your song have that make it stand out from the crowd?

What makes my song stand out in a show full of ‘bangers’ is its emotionality and the depth of its lyrics. I think the public will appreciate going down a few gears for a moment and embracing the moment to reflect on their emotions.

With a song like this, with so much personal sentiment, the trick is usually “less is more”. How are you going to use the stage at Benidorm so that your message transmits to all Spanish viewers?

As you say, less is more, it’s a song that doesn’t need much more than to be listened to and performed from the heart. I’ll be going to Benidorm with a beautiful and minimalist visual concept that I’m sure will add to the beauty of the song.

Have you had the chance to meet any of your fellow competitors? Who do you get on with best, and which songs, other than your own, are your favourites?

Yes! We all get on really well, we all make a great team. I get on especially well with Kuve, Carla and Celine but everyone is marvellous. My favourite songs are Celine van Heel’s La casa, DeTeresa’s La pena and Lachispa’s Hartita de llorar.

So, now let’s talk about the end game of Benidorm Fest: the Eurovision Song Contest. Do you consider yourself a fan? Are there any songs or performances you’ve enjoyed over the years?

My relationship with Eurovision has always been one of admiration. My mum always organised dinners with friends to watch the Contest with at home when I was a kid. There have been so many memorable performances that have inspired me, and I’d love to be a part of that.

In your opinion, what does Spain need to do in order to win Eurovision for the first time since 1969?

I think Spain needs to bring EXCITEMENT.

What would it mean for you to represent your country at Eurovision?

It would be such a huge honour. Also it would mean bringing this tribute to my mother to the whole of Europe, which would make me very happy. She deserves it.

And now onto some fun bonus questions for our fans to get to know you a bit better:

What’s the one thing you couldn’t live without?

Music – it’s essential to my life.

What’s your favourite film soundtrack?

Out of Africa. It’s a masterful, exciting work.

Do you have any pets?

Yes, I love animals – I have a cat, two dogs and two rabbits.
