First of all, how would you introduce yourself for our readers, who don’t know you. Who is Matthew Cilia?
I can say that my music describes my character a lot as it can be deceptively subtle with a burning passion for life when you dig a bit deeper.
What is your story with music? What is your ispiration now?
I have been in the Maltese music scene for the past 6 years as the lead vocalist for 2 bands however Control is my debut in MESC and also my first ever release as a solo artist. I can describe my style as a bit of a throwback to the 2000’s nu-metal scene with a bit more of a modern twist. Inspirations include Linkin Park, Architects and Bring me the horizon among many other talented artists.
Your song in MESC 2025 is called “Control”. Can you give us an insight about the song, what was the story or idea behind it?
“Control” deals with the feeling of finding yourself even though others see only chaos and the loss of control. It deals with finding myself as an artist over the last year even when there seemed to be very limited hope of finding a way back to perform live once again.
How do you prepare for the show?
I’m usually quite calm before the show as the team I’m performing with is tight-knit and there’s trust in our capabilities all around. There’s the usual vocal warmups and stretches however I always do a group huddle of appreciation before we go out.
Winning MESC would mean you can represent Malta in Eurovision. What would it mean to you if it happened?
It would be an absolute honour and privilege to represent this beautiful and talented country. It would also represent that the battle I have fought internally over the past year has led to something and that I have connected to people on a major scale.
Do you have a favourite Maltese or non-Maltese Eurovision entry from all time? Or maybe favourite MESC song?
Very tough choice to make here as for a Maltese entry I would have to go with Ira Losco-7th Wonder while a non-Maltese entry would be Blind Channel-Dark Side.
When you are not working with music, what activities you like to do?
I am an avid professional wrestling and Leeds United fan so I always try to catch up and watch what’s happening whenever I can.
And for the last one, do you have a message for ESC Bubble readers and Malta fans?
Always live in the now and be as creative as you can possibly be. Try to leave a good impact wherever you go and always ROCK ON.
Thank you for the interview, we wish you all the best for the show!
