Spain aims to change Eurovision fortunes with new HoD

César Vallejo has been appointed as the new head of the Spanish delegation (HoD) for Eurovision!

Vallejo, currently the Deputy Director of Premieres at RTVE Play, will assume this role while continuing to lead Benidorm Fest, Spain’s national selection method for Eurovision.

This appointment comes at a crucial time for Spain’s Eurovision strategy, aiming to establish a robust and ambitious artistic direction connected with national talent, all while trying to get Spain off the bottom of the Eurovision scoreboard, a place that is getting more comfortable for the country that has finished 21st place or worse eight times since 2015.

Vallejo stated that this new phase seeks to achieve a balance between artistic quality, international impact, and collective pride in each edition of Benidorm Fest and every Eurovision participation.

He succeeds Ana María Bordas, who has become the President of the Eurovision Reference Group of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Bordas led the Spanish delegation since 2017 and will remain involved in the project through her new international role.

With over two decades at RTVE, César Vallejo has a strong background in management and an understanding of the music industry. His experience, including covering Eurovision from various angles, provides him with a deep insight into the Contest.

Vallejo aims to introduce a renewed vision for the 5ᵗʰ edition of Benidorm Fest, ensuring unified and consistent strategies throughout the Eurovision process.

Vallejo emphasized that RTVE’s accumulated experience should serve as a foundation for future growth, stating,

“We have learned a lot. It’s time to turn that experience into tangible achievements and impactful proposals.”

He also highlighted the importance of supporting artists, aiming for a respectful and enriching journey to Eurovision. RTVE’s renewed commitment focuses on quality, diversity, and talent, combining experience with artistic sensibility and international ambition.
