Sander Sanchez:”The message is very relevant for today’s society and youth culture”

Sander Sanchez is competing in ‘Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2020′ with the song “Screens” and we had the opportunity to talk with him before the final. The National final will take place on 7 March, where 10 songs will compete to win the ticket for Rotterdam.

Hello Sander Sanchez and thank you for taking you time for ESCBubble! First of all, how was your reaction when you heard you will be at Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2020?
I was over the moon happy! At first, I was a semifinalist – so knowing that the people in my district voted me and my song into the finals was crazy and so confirming. Because I felt like I had fierce competition. I was waiting for a phone-call at home and looked like a hobo haha – I was expecting a friend, so when it knocked on the door I thought it was him – but instead I had a microphone pointed to my head and radio folk standing there like, “HEY you won, and you are live! What do you wanna say to the people!” – and I was shook :D! haha
I didn’t expect to win in my district, but I sure hoped I would xD! So you could imagine my confusion and excitement in a mix 😀 Then they gave me 5 minutes to freshen up for a little photoshoot! Of course, I went out and celebrated with all my friends.

What are your expectation from the contest?
I’m expecting a crazy over the top show, with crazy staging and scenography. Also, I’m expecting it to be a (hopefully) organized chaos with media all over. Just a huge party in total with sick costumes and fashion!

What made you decide to enter in the contest?
I was asked if I was interested. Someone had stumbled upon my Instagram and saw me really fitting! And I don’t blame them haha – because I am a pretty spacey guy with music thoroughly integrated into my life. I was asked if I wanted to represent a song by an international songwriting-team Jonas Thander, Liam Craig and Christopher Wortley – so I didn’t write the song – but thought it was good and said yes right away. I entered because it’s a big deal, and it could open some doors while giving some public recognition. Also, in the social environments I’m a part of, Eurovision song contest is almost like Christmas haha. So I didn’t hesitate to join.

Can you tell us about your song for Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, what it is about? And why do you think your song would be a good choice for Denmark?
My song is called “Screens”. In today’s modern society with the internet and social media we are now more connected than ever – yet this new world can also distance us more from the world and each other. And maybe for some cause loneliness and isolation. So this song tries to encourage people to be more aware of what you might be missing around the screens we’re often looking at, and absorb the physical world we are living in more than you might be doing. And be more present with both strangers and loved ones.
The song is good choice for Denmark because it’s a message that differs a lot from the many love songs that the contest presents. The message is very relevant for today’s society and youth culture, and the generations to come.
And because it’s a beautiful song, with a strong bridge, that takes you on a dynamic journey with a form that is both typical yet has a daring chorus.

How will be the staging at DMGP2020? What can we expect from your performance?
Definitely some abstract screening that speaks to the subconscious rather than visuals that are predictable. Also you can expect my show going towards a resolution – and my movements on stage to mirror a development regarding the theme isolation – and breaking free from this. So an emotional yet cool performance!

Do you follow Eurovision and have you a favorite song from the contest?
I really like Australia’s song “Montaigne – Don’t Break Me”. It really gives me the “Marina and the diamonds” feel that I personally am very attracted to. She is an awesome singer and the song is very powerful, very suitable for Eurovision without being to cliché on that matter.

Any other plans for 2020? Can we expect new music from Sander Sanchez?
I have a lot of music to show the world after I’m done! At the moment all of my material are demo-versions yet to be recorded and mastered – But after this rollercoaster is done with, I can focus on my music 100% and show people MY writing-style and musical vibe! I literally can’t wait for the world to hear what my music sounds like and to receive the messages and experiences I carry around inside! 2020 is the year. And I already have summer-shows to prepare for ;P stay tuned!

In the end, I want to thank you for your time and please, if you have a message for your fans and our readers here on ESCBubble?
Well! Thank you all for reading this! 😀 I hope I can live up to the expectations that you guys may or may not have 😛 Say yes to all the great opportunities that come your way, and don’t stress about the practical stuff around it! Deal with the consequences along the way, knowing you went for it. Rather you regret doing it than regret not doing it! Whatever it may be in life! That’s all for now – hopefully I’ll see you in Rotterdam!
