Welcome back to ESCBubble’s coverage for Eurovision 2021! After a marathon day yesterday and this morning of second rehearsals, we’re back with some more first rehearsals! Join us this evening as we check out the first rehearsals of the six automatic qualifiers.

Right we’re almost done! The final country to have their first rehearsal is… Spain!

First Rehearsal

Blas Canto is wearing a silky black shirt with black trousers, and starts the performance on stage alone with a fairly dark stage. The songs is sung for the first half of the verse in acapella, before the beat kicks in. There’s also been a considerable revamp to the production which now feels a lot quicker than that of the original studio version. The beat kicks in nicely and it sounds a little like Pastora Soler’s song from 2012 with an anthemic build. Vocally he sounds fantastic, there is a beautiful raw component to his tone which works really well with the intimacy of the song.

As the song goes along, we realise that Spain have a huge moon prop that they have brought with them. It looks absolutely huge, and there are quite a few camera shots which focus on it. The LED backdrop works beautifully with this prop too, with celestial and astral displays which work really well around the moon. Blas remains stood at the front of the stage for the whole performance and is vocally perfect even on the high notes towards the end.

Before Eurovision

Blas Canto, famous originally for being part of popular latin boy band Auryn, has forged a solo career over the past years with some incredible songs such as “El no soy yo” so there was a lot of excitement from fans when he was one of the first confirmed acts of Eurovision 2020. Last year, Blas was set to perform “Universo” which was a pop song with a very high note in it! Following the cancellation of the contest, Spanish broadcaster RTVE announced that Blas Canto would be returning for the 2021 contest!

Earlier this year, Blas Canto hoped to replicate the success of Pastora Soler by holding a national selection show between some songs all performed by him. Ultimately with almost 60% of the vote, “Voy A Quedarme” was selected. In contrast to his song for 2020, this is a tender ballad in line with the emotions many have felt over the past year of isolation and loss. Check out the music video here:
