NBC picks up rights for American Song Contest

The EBU have today confirmed that the American network NBC has picked up the rights to broadcast the American spin off of the Eurovision Song Contest, American Song Contest.The EBU have said:

“Based on the world’s largest music event, the American Song Contest will feature live original musical performances, representing all 50 states, five US territories and the Nation’s capital. In the best Eurovision tradition, they will be competing to win the country’s vote for the Best Original Song.

The live competition consists of three rounds as the acts compete in a series of Qualifying Rounds, followed by the Semi Finals and the ultimate Grand Final where one state or territory will emerge victorious. In addition to fan votes, a jury of music industry professionals will also lend their expertise to the competition.”

Anders Lenhoff and Peter Settman, Christer Björkman and Ola Melzig, acquired the American format rights for the  Eurovision Song Contest from the EBU and partnered with the production company Propagate to bring Eurovision to the states.

In a joint statement the team said:

‘The Eurovision Song Contest is the biggest live music event in the world, and it is a great honour to bring it to the United States and transform our dream of American Song Contest into a reality on NBC. It’s awe-inspiring to stand at the beginning of an American legacy and it doesn’t get more exciting than that.’

American Song Contest is looking for the best original song showcasing an artist’s style and individuality. The submissions process to represent each state or territory is already underway and welcomes all varieties of music including country, dance, electronic, pop, rap, R&B, rock and more.

The show will feature live performances, representing all fifty states, five United States territories and the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C, competing to win the country’s vote for the ‘Best Original Song’.

The live Contest will consist of three rounds as the acts compete in a series of Qualifying Rounds, followed by Semi-Finals and the ultimate Grand Final where one state or territory will win.

“American Song Contest combines the competitive spirit of rooting for your home team along with epic performances that will introduce viewers to the musical cultures that make up America”

With the entire series airing live, American Song Contest is a co-production between Propagate and Universal Television Alternative Studio, a division of Universal Studio Group, with the executive producer of ‘The Voice’ at the helm.

We first heard about plans for the American Song Contest in 2019.  The contest, which should begin at the end of 2021 or Spring of next year will feature a mix of unknown and rising artists, aided with the help of various record labels. Each state will be in charge of selecting their own entries. Interested applicants can apply soon.
