Review of the Austrian Eurovision entry by Teya & Salena

The Austrian entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool will be released tomorrow at 7:40 CET. As we already know, the song will be performed by Teya & Salena who met during their participation in the Austrian casting show Starmania 21, where they quickly became friends and decided to make music together.

Our editor Sebi had the great honor to be invited to a press event in the ORF studios this morning, where the song was presented to local journalists and fan media. Here is Sebi’s personal opinion after seeing and hearing the Official Music Video:

I was very surprised by how the song sounds. Obviously, there have been leaks online and Eurovision fans have been gossiping about this for weeks. But I can definitely say that it does quite different from the leaked snippet. I went into the event and expected an average, slightly trashy but overall very basic pop song. But there is more to it: The song is absolutely crazy! We can all look forward to an insanely weird music video tomorrow, that might remind a few of you of this year’s Croatian entry. The radio friendly pop elements, combined with the unexpected weirdness of it could be a winning combination. The two girls also sang a bit of their song acapella and they had decent vocals and harmonized well. I would definitely not rule this out as a qualifier for now!

During the event, it was also revealed that tomorrow’s release date was chosen deliberately, as it is the International Women’s Day and Teya and Salena are the first ever female duo to represent Austria in the Eurovision Song Contest. The song comes with a feminist message and to the question why they use “Edgar Allan Poe” in their song, Teya and Salena replied the following:

The song is in fact about the writer Edgar Allan Poe. It was actually a coincidence that we used this historical figure, but then we found out that he was the first writer who made a living from writing. Therefore he lived a financially challenging life and we can relate to that as songwriters. The song is about our personal experience as female songwriters in a male dominated industry.

Furthermore, the duo revealed that the participation in the Eurovision Song Contest is the fulfillment of their childhood dream and that they were first and foremost looking forward to meeting all the other acts and expecting a lot of fun from Liverpool. When they were asked about the pressure of representing Austria, a country that did not qualify to the Eurovision final in the last three editions, they said the following:

It did not really pressure us at first but people keep mentioning that and it makes us slightly nervous. Obviously we would love to go to the final but we will see what happens on the night and regardless, nobody will be able to take away that experience from us!

Austria’s song will officially be released tomorrow morning at 7:40 CET on the official Eurovision Song Contest YouTube channel:
