Today SVT, the Swedish television, has published the new format for the Andra Chansen stage of their national final, Melodifestivalen. Sensed as the most peculiar stage of the selection, SVT has been changing the format of the evening in order to find a better and more exciting way to select the last entries for the grand final.
In the last two years, out of the eight participating songs, five moved to a second round of voting and then four proceeded to the duel phase of the evening, with just two songs qualifying for the next Saturday, live from Friends Arena.
From this year, the eight songs in Andra Chansen will be divided into four duels. The winner of each duel will qualify instantly for the final, rising the number of songs live from Friends Arena to 12. Every duel will be between a third and fourth placed coming from different semifinals.
This is one of the many changes for this year’s Melodifestivalen, as the number of participating entries has been lowered to 28 from 32, leaving just 7 songs competing in each semifinal.
Andra Chansen will be broadcast on SVT1 on the 7th of March, right after the semifinals on the 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th of February. The Swedish entry for Vienna will be crowned on the 14th of March in Stockholm.
