Aidan Cassar‘s lawyers have sent a letter to the Public Broadcasting Services (PBS) of Malta, asking them to reverse the decision that saw him removed from contention at this year’s Malta Eurovision Song Contest on Monday.

According to The Times of Malta, the letter also threatens further legal action if PBS does not change its mind and reinstate “Reġina” in the competition.
The drama began on Monday, when PBS forced Aidan’s withdrawl from MESC as he had broken a rule from the competition – singers are barred from publicizing their entries from the quarter-final stage onwards.

In its defense, PBS pointed out that Aidan was warned several times about his social media posts about his song, yet he ignored them and posted more content. Aidan has yet to comment publicly on the matter. A spokesperson for PBS explained,

“There are clear rules that say no promotion may be carried out from when the names of the quarter-finals are announced.”

His legal team is arguing that Aidan has been singled out by PBS, as several other contestants also published social media posts about their entries, participation and sponsorships.
Furthermore, the letter sent to PBS claims that the broadcaster never gave Aidan the opportunity to defend himself. Nor has any explanation been given about the specific reasons for Aidan’s disqualification from MESC.

This was to be Aidan’s second consecutive MESC participation. Last year, he became a fan favourite with his Maltese-language song Ritmu which placed second in the national final, 20 points behind winner Emma Muscat.
