Surorile Osoianu: ‘Eurovision for us is an opportunity to express ourselves through music, for audiences of different generations’

This Saturday Moldova will find out its representative for Eurovision 2023 and we had the opportunity to chat with Surorile Osoianu a few weeks ago after their audition for Etapa Națională, you can check out our interview below.

Hello Surorile Osoianu and thank you for taking your time for ESCBubble! First of all, how was your reaction when you heard you will be at ”Etapa Nationala Final”?
The fact that we are in the finals of Etapa Naționala made us very happy, however we understand that more work awaits us.

You tried to represent Moldova at Eurovision in 2017, but Suntroke stood in your way. What made you participate again and what are your expectations from the contest this time?
We received the song from the composer Jonathan Alexandru, it impressed us a lot, inspired us and even motivated us to accept the challenge of participating in this year competition. Eurovision for us is an opportunity to express ourselves through music, for audiences of different generations, locally and from the global community, what represents us as a nation, as a cultural identity.

Your song for Eurovision is called “Bade, badişor, badiță”, can you tell us what’s the song about and message behind it?
“Bade, Bădișor, Bădiță” is an archaic song that reproduces a peasant atmosphere in the former Moldovan lands. The original music is written by the composer Jonathan Alexandru, adapted to our vocal and interpretative style. The arrangement by Jonathan is made up only of traditional instruments, 16 in number, almost all of them being printed by Alexandru. The lyrics are written by folklor music singer and lyricist Elena Ioniță, they describe the following story: The song is about a girl who’s waiting for her lover (Bădișor) and the whole action takes place in an old Moldovan village, but the lover didn’t come because he went to the sheepfold for work. The whole story is about mourning the love for your favorite person, as the girl from the song wants to be with him, but she understands that Bădișor needs to work, so they can live together.

How will the staging be at Etapa Nationala 2023? What can we expect from your performance?
We are preparing and collaborating intensively with the entire team we have on our side. We are inspired by those who know their job well and know the secret of a good shows.

Which of the other contestants are you excited to see on Etapa Nationala this year? And who do you consider to be your biggest competitor?
All contestants are different and express their creativity in their own way, we will do it our way, as we have accustomed the audience over the years.

We know that you have collaborated with many young artists, such as Irina Rimes, Lupii lui Calacea, Subcarpati, can you tell us who you liked to share the stage with throughout your career?
With each of the mentioned artists it was a real pleasure to collaborate, they are some unique and valuable experiences for us. These collaborations represent a fusion between authentic folklore and modern music, we are glad that in this way folklore music also reaches young people.

Do you follow Eurovision and if so, do you have a favorite song from the contest?
It’s hard to choose, believe us, there have been a lot of good songs over the years.

Any other plans for 2023? Can we expect new music from Surorile Osoianu?
The year 2023 involves a big tour in Romania with Lupii lui Alex Calancea. We will promote the new album made in collaboration with LUPII and we will work on some new songs.
