Måneskin’s VMA performance gets censored after winning Best Alternative

The Eurovision Song Contest winners Måneskin have performed their huge hits “I Wanna Be Your Slave” and “Supermodel” at the MTV Video Music Awards in Newark, New Jersey this Saturday. The young, Italian band has gained international popularity after their Eurovision victory and their success continued at the VMAs, as they won Best Alternative Video for “I Wanna Be Your Slave.

Despite winning a VMA for “I Wanna Be Your Slave“, their performance of “Supermodel” has caused a lot more discussions on social media. Only people who saw the band perform live in the arena could actually see their whole stage show. People who watched the VMAs on television or the internet, saw a lot of wide camera shots of the stage and it quickly became obvious, that the produers were trying to hide something about Måneskin’s performance.

The reason for the censorship was the outfit of bassist Victoria De Angelis, whose top fell down during the performance of “Supermodel”, revealing her uncovered nipple. MTV’s immediate reaction was to zoom out on the performance and to not show Victoria on stage anymore. This caused a massive outrage all over social media. Fans were angry that they couldn’t see all of Måneskin’s stage show and many Twitter users even accused MTV of being sexist, since a woman’s nipple had to be hidden but the outfit of frontman Damiano David, that revealed his butt cheeks, didn’t get censored.

The band didn’t react to the scandal yet but showed themselves really happy and proud about winning a Video Music Award. We congratulate Måneskin on their big and well deserved success!

What do you think about MTV’s reaction? Was it appropriate to censor Måneskin’s performance or were people robbed of seeing a good stage show? Let us know your thoughts in the comments and on our social media profiles!

I think Victoria should wear a bra next time Måneskin performs at many major awards shows and on tour.

Måneskin isn’t exactly known for a lot of clothes. We will see what happens at their next gigs 🙂
